Dark Shadows

When we last left DARK SHADOWS in  Dark Shadows DVD Collection 4 . Dr. Woodard was killed by Barnabas with the help of Dr. Julia Hoffman. Woodard knew everything about Barnabas. David told Woodard and Burke about the secret room in the Mausoleum. Burke Devlin died from a plane crash in the Amazon jungle. Dr. Hoffman continued her tests on Barnabas by his own insistent orders. Dr. Julia Hoffman warns him the vaccine is not ready yet. He wants to live as a human again and be out in the daylight. The tests go wrong and Barnabas becomes a 140 year old man. Carolyn has also seen Sarah, the child ghost. She now believes everything David has told her. Carolyn sneaks in to Barnabas' basement, as David did before, and finds the coffin. The aged Barnabas captures Carolyn and attacks her with his fangs. Carolyn is now under the spell of Barnabas. Since they are cousins, if Carolyn helps Victoria into Barnabas' plans, he will give Carolyn eternal life. On a stormy night, Dr. Hoffman is haunted by the unsettled ghost of Dr. Woodard. She looks for Sarah at the Mausoleum and she appears to her. Hoffman is then haunted by two spirit voices and blood oozes from a crypt. Back at the Collinwood Mansion, she continues to be haunted all by herself without anyone else there.Hoffman goes berserk. The next week, Sarah finally appears to her brother, Barnabas, to save Dr. Hoffman from the vampire's hands. Julia tells the Collins family they must have a seance to bring forth the spirit of Sarah to help David. Barnabas joins the seance.Carolyn fakes the transformation, but Sarah comes through and speaks from Victoria. Sarah tells of her most frightening night in 1795. Suddenly the lights go out. When Barnabas turns the lights on, a different woman is at the table. She is Phyllis Wick, the governess for Sarah from 1795. Victoria has disappeared. She has been transported through time into 1795. Victoria is standing in front of the Old House. She meets Barnabas and Sarah. The house is so new-looking. She is told Collinwood is being built. She meets Nathan Forbes, Barnabas' mother Naomi Collins, Abigail Collins, Jeremiah Collins, Joshua Collins, Angelique, Natalie DuPres, Andre DuPres and Josette DuPres. Barnabas is set to marry Josette in one month...not if Angelique has her way.She just tried to kill Barnabas with her powers. This is such a wonderful collection. It took me back to my youth and made me feel so alive and in love with Angelique once again!

After the extremely disappointing set 12, which centered almost completely around the two intolerable children, set 13 is a real breath of fresh air. For the most part, it reinvigorates my love for the show. It takes a few episodes, but by about the middle of the first disk Barnabas uses the I-Ching wands to travel back in time to 1897. The scene where Professor Stokes performs the dark ritual to enable Barnabas to do this is fabulous - this is the kind of stuff I watch the show for. Pure Gothic suspense.Once in the past, all the actors play different parts. Barnabas first meets Sandor the gypsy (formerly Professor Stokes), and another gypsy named Magda (formerly Juliet Hoffman). They live at the old house. The reason they're there is the matriarch of the Collins family employs Magda to tell the future. This matriarch is now on her death bed, and the Collins family members are all anxious to see how the will is split up. Besides Edward and Judith (formerly Roger and Elizabeth Collins), there's also Quentin - we saw a lot of him in DVD set 12, but now we finally get to hear him speak in his New England accent. Quentin is a real good-for-nothing, returned from England just in time to try to ingratiate himself with grand-mama before she dies, and he's incredibly full of himself. However, Selby's marvelous acting leaves the character rather sympathetic and not all together unlikable.Once the will is sorted out, the plot lines start coming fast and furious. Governess Rachel Drummond (formerly Maggie Evans) notices lights on in the tower room and investigates. We eventually discover the secret - good stuff! Quentin along with the family lawyer Evan Hanley (formerly Nicolas Blair) conduct a black magic ritual and summon Angelique to help them in their fight against Barnabas. To say this doesn't turn out the way they intended is a bit of an understatement. Edward's wife Laura shows up, but Quentin is sure that he saw her die. There's something very odd about her. I'm only touching on the high points, there are all sorts of other happenings taking place. Barnabas is a vampire again, Quentin is turned into a zombie, an insane woman runs loose in the house, Angelique starts blackmailing Barnabas like she always does, it goes on and on.Eventually the children are taken away to Reverend Trask's school, where Rachel ends up as well. This is unfortunately where it gets bad, as "The Shrieker" is back: Denise Nickerson, the child actor who plays Nora Collins, and who apparently never saw a line of dialogue that she didn't think could be improved by adding three exclamation points to the end of it. I'd compare the experience of listening to her to going out to dinner and being seated next to a couple with an infant who won't quit screaming. It is painful, to say the least. Young Jamison Collins does his best to annoy as well. With so many wonderfully intriguing plot lines going on at once, I really can't fathom the thought process that went into putting these two brats at center stage once again. Our ears have only recently stopped ringing after enduring their squealing barrage in DVD set 12, and now they're doing it again.Fortunately this doesn't happen until the midpoint of disk four; We can only hope it will be short lived. Other than that, the rest of the episodes are absolutely fantastic - exactly the sort of stuff that keeps me buying these DVD sets one after another.

The Plot thickens in 1970, as Daphne Harridge pleads with the Ghost of Gerrard Stiles, begging him to spare the lives of the children of Collinwood. Dr. Julia Hoffman and Willie Loomis discover the vampire who has been attacking Maggie Evans. Using the starway through time, Julia escapes to the year 1840and anxiously awaits the arrival of Barnabas Collins to join her, posing as her sister. Desmond Collins brings a present for Quentin Collins, the mysterious head of Judah Zachery. After discovering Barnabs has been released from his coffin, Angelique returns to Collinwood using the alias Valerie.The plots just keep getting better, a must have for the collector.

Volume 15 is full of suspense and after each episode you crave more and more. In the year 1897, Magda the gypsy hopes to end the curse of the werewolf that she put onto Quentin Collins. She reveals to Barnabas Collins that she has gained possession of the Magical hand of Count Petofi. The Collins family discover that Barnabas is a Vampire and he is forced to go into hiding. Count Petofi brings the Artist Charles Deleware Tate to Collinsport and paint a Portrait of Quentin. During the full moon, Charity Trask sees the portrait turn into a werewolf.

Dark Shadows Volume 14 is awesome. In 1897, Quentin Collins and Magda the gypsy dicover the urn that contains the flames of life for Laura Collins, an immortal Phoenix. Jenny Collins, Quentin's insane wife escapes the confinds of Collinwood to hunt Quentin. Magda, Jenny's sister places the Curse of the Werewolf on Quentin after he killed Jenny. Jamison Collins finds Barnabas' coffin in the basement of the Old house and reveals his discovery to his father Edward.

Its the Strange and Terrifying world of 1970 Parallel time, Angelique the witch torments Maggie Collins to fear her Husband , Quentin.Angelique reveals her true identity and warns housekeeper Julia Hoffman that the vampire Barnabas Collins must be destroyed. John Yaeger, the evil alter ego of Dr. Cyrus Longworth goes on a rampage and Kidnaps Maggie Collins. After a series of horrifying event a crazed Timothy Stokes sets fire to Collinwood.
