Level 2: Three Short Stories of Sherlock Holmes KPF with Integrated Audio: Three Short Sherlock (Pearson English Graded Readers)

In our (6th) class we read short story three: "Sherlock Holmes and the Dangerous Road" during one afternoon at school. Most of the students liked the story. In this story a young woman, Miss Violet Smith, comes to Holmes because a man has been following her on a bicycle. Miss Smith works for Mr Carruthers at his home in Farnham. Both Mr Carruthers and another man, Mr Woodley, want to marry Violet, but she is already engaged to someone else. First Watson, then Holmes go to Farnham to investigate. In the dramatic conclusion to the story, Violet is kidnapped and forced to marry Mr Woodley. Can Holmes and Watson help her?The characters are really interesting and the story itself is really exciting and surprising. It is also not really difficult to read and understand. If you have a friend who likes Sherlock Holmes or detective stories we can recommend this book!

I found each of the three short stories in this book inappropriate to use in the classroom with elementary or middle school children. The first short story ends with obvious gender bias, the second story has racial bias, and the third story is violent when Sherlock tells Watson to put his gun to the suspects head. I expected much better of Pearson publishing.

Rien de bien nouveau dans cette collection qui plaît toujours autant à mes élèves qui débutent dans la lecture en anglais.Cela les conforte dans le fait qu'ils possèdent un bon vocabulaire de base. Petites histoires bien tournées et les exercices à la fin du livre permettent une bonne compréhension de l'histoire.

I'm an English teacher in Spain and like to use Readers to make English interesting. Unfortunately this book really isn't very interesting at all and with my last student we abandoned the book after without even finishing the first story.
