Vibrant Colors With Smooth Drawing That Layers We’ll - Professional Artists’ Dream
I absolutely *adore* these colored pencils! This is a great starter set of colors - great for anyone looking to explore or improve their colored pencil drawing techniques. I have my Masters in Painting and Drawing and have sold my artwork, so I would consider myself a professional artist. These pencils have excellent quality vibrant pigments - I have explored a wide variety of colored pencils and I would say with absolute assurance that the pigments in the Polychromos are the absolute best of the best. I even own an expensive set of Holbein colored pencils, and the Polychromos pigments and super smooth feel while drawing surpasses the expensive Holbeins. (Holbein has the best range of pastel and light colors available in colored pencils, so they are worth looking into if you love working with colored pencils, but I love these Polychromos pencils even more)I started using colored pencils with the line of Prismacolor Premier pencils. That brand is also smooth to draw with and a good starting pencil especially considering price. But the Polychromos are oil-based colored pencils, so that feature combined with the superior pigmentation makes these colored pencils many steps and building floors above. Also with the Prismacolor, the leads break way too easily when sharpening. I’ve used the Polychromos a whole lot and I have never even heard a crack, let alone had a break in a lead tip. These Polychromos sharpen like a dream. If you are used to Prismacolors, you may find the lead of the Polychromos to be a little harder, but I actually find that to be another plus because of the aforementioned breaking leads but also the harder leads allow for drawing with greater detail and you don’t have to sharpen these pencils as much. Most artists will quickly get used to the change in the feel of drawing with the harder leads, especially once the practically sparkling pigments start to dazzle you.I find the Polychromos are a better value than any colored pencils that I’ve tried even though the upfront cost is higher, because they do not wear down easily. You get more use with each Polychromos pencil, so they will last a lot longer than pencils with soft leads. Also, because these pencils are not wax-based, you can add layer upon layer without overloading the paper to max capacity as quickly as wax pencils. There is also no occurrence of “wax blooms” that you get with wax-based pencils like Prismacolors. A wax bloom is where the wax builds up on the paper in a blob and it doesn’t allow you to add any more colors or layers on top of it. Wax blooms also do not look great and are hard to disguise, so they can ruin an otherwise excellent drawing, wasting a lot of time and causing heartbreak or frustration. This won’t happen with the Polychromos colored pencilsThis 36 color set has a diverse range of different shades of frequently-used colors, in other words, the color variety is great!. I am drawing abstract pictures at the moment, so the range of colors is great. I do want to save up for a set with more colors, but this was a great set to learn about the pencils so I know that I won’t be disappointed if I spend more money on a larger set. I will probably do a happy dance on the day I am able to finally get the full color set.If you are debating whether you should choose the Faber-Castell Polychromos colored pencils or not, I can wholeheartedly say that you will not be disappointed.
