Pops Locks & Shimmies 2 with Sadie and Kaya - Belly Dance DVD

Give it 3.5 stars
There's good-to-great stuff on this video. The teaching is done extremely well--except for the left-right thing. They do NOT make sure they are talking about YOUR LEFT and YOUR RIGHT when teaching and for a DVD this expensive that's just ridiculous. That's one star off all by itself. The upperbody part--I'd learned much of it in other videos--so I won't really comment. It was the lower body part of the video that worked for me. And I should say that it worked for as long as I used the repeat function on my DVD player. They opted for higher content rather than high repetitions--that's okay with me for the most part. A couple of Kaya's combinations? They needed a few more repeats even with the repeat function on the DVD player. As for rating the teaching segments--It wasn't that I didn't know the moves they taught. It was their focus on when to pop, when to lock, and which muscle groups to use. That was invaluable to me. I mean, if you use your legs instead of your obliques and lower-stomach to do certain moves, they may pretty much the same BUT you may NOT be able to walk or layer hip circles on top of those same moves. That's important. Again, using the repeat function on the DVD player I learned a lot and I got stronger too.The shimmy section is fairly weak compared to Aziza's Practice Companion but then again so is everyone else's shimmy section. I guess it was average compared to most. Not sure. The ending? Sadie and Kaya seem to have a problem linking up the performance at the end with what was taught as usual. In the final analysis, there's a lot in this DVD. Maybe a third of it is so-so but half of it is fantastic. It's focus on using the right muscles has enhanced my ability to learn from other DVDs that are taught half as well. I'm glad they are keeping up the series.

Nothing new but still fun to try
If you are a beginner belly dancer trying to add something to your repertoire this DVD is great for practicing your pops and locks. It is pretty much a low budget production so it seems a little campy at times and I personally don't like Kaya, she is kinda scary. They have great break down of what they are teaching and a nice performance at the end of the DVD to give a lot of ideas. If you are an experienced belly dancer this will bore you to tears...

Is it worth it?
This is definitely not a beginners dvd.No way, No how. If you aren't at least an intermediate I would suggest the first dvd in this series Pops, Locks and Shimmies 1. Having the first one is beneficial as this dvd refers back to some of the material covered in the first. Kaya and Sadie are wonderful teachers. Their explanations are clear, demonstrations are useful and they don't waste time talking a lot. They get right into the movement which I loved. Both are always generous with the wealth of information that they know. The dvd is nice and the material is fresh. The combo's are never boring nor easy.I love that fact that they always keep you moving using the feet with actual bellydance footpatterns. The second installment to pops, locks, and shimmies, does really take off where part 1 finished. The combo's are really where the layering starts. This dvd has:Chest-Figure 8's- followed by a combo and Diamonds followed by a comboHorizontal hips- figure 8's back and front followed by 3 combo's using other information from the first dvd.Vertical hips- 3/4 up and down, followed by 2 combo'sAbdominal technique-pops,and locksUndulations- up, down followed by 2 combo'sPelvic isolations-hip square with 1 combo(This is a personal favorite combo)lastly shimmies with layersThis dvd is 1 hour and 53 minutes long. A nice practice session time. I am more fond of PLS 1 as opposed to this one though, the information that was covered was nice but it seemed to be missing something PLS1 had.I am not sure if they were more thorough because that was the first dvd of this set or what.I gave it a four and not a five for exactly those reasons there was not as much covered on here as in the first dvd and the pricing for almost $45 with shipping/handling and taxes that is a bit much even for the famed kaya and Sadie instruction. It would be awesome if they put some of the moves they drilled into a short choreography at the end of the dvd's.The performance was perfect as usual :)

A DVD for intermediate and advance level dancers
This is strictly for intermediate and advance level dancers in good physical condition. While they do explain and demo, it is fast paced and you need a good belly dance foundation to follow along. They do teach moves used in their signature style it's a good idea to start with Pops Locks & Shimmies with Sadie and Kaya - Belly Dance DVD . I especially enjoyed the section where they layer different upper body moves on a shimmy of your choice, it makes a good and enjoyable workout. The fact that they do teach together gives you the unique ability to see the move from different angles. There is a lot of material so there are a lot of moves and combinations to chose from that will fit your style and body type. The run time is almost 2 hours and includes a performance at the end. I realize a lot of people complain about the price but you would pay more for a workshop. It certainly is one DVD which gives you your money's worth.
