Impressive
Just another well engineered device by the Metabo/ex-Hitachi engineers. I have an electric Bosch Bulldog unit that I would use if doing extensive work indoors. But this Metabo HPT unit can keep up and the convenience makes it the go to device. It has a max RPM rating of 1050 and is indeed a variable speed brushless motor. My only complaint is that on my unit, the selector switch is very tight and requires a good amount of strength to move the dial between modes. For most typical uses, the OEM 3.0aHr battery does fine, albeit the fit is a bit tight for battery removal.Otherwise, it operates impressively.

Beastly
I expect nothing less from Hitachi > Metabo HPT. I invested in this platform when the triple hammer impact driver came out and haven’t looked back. I’m a commercial plumber mechanic and consider the applications I use my tools in to be of some of the most extreme and diverse situations and have no problem saying all of my green kit performs consistently when I need it to. From 0 to 100 degrees F, wet or dry, there’s no problems with any task from a Tapcon or Sammy on up to 1” holes through galvanized steel and 6” concrete decking for eventual anchoring of large diameter pipe. The comfortability is nice as well and balances out perfectly once you get a chunky battery put in. Fitted with plenty rubber over mold in areas that take the most abuse from dust, etc. LED lights up the area you are drilling even in poorly lit situations. There are 3 settings, hammer, drill and hammer drill. No need to ask if this will handle…..because yes, it does DIY. 😆 It’s a premium unit built for use in commercial and industrial type construction. I would only recommend something else if get in a situation where you need a Jackhammer. Now that I think about it, this SDS Plus and others have almost make SDS Max obsolete in my line of work that is. I almost never need to grab something bigger. I expect nothing less from Metabo HPT/ Hitachi. I’ll start by saying, similar to the rest of my green tools, the SDS Plus thrives in industrial and commercial applications. No need to ask if this will handle the chores of a DIYer, it’s beyond that. There’s a reason MetaboHPT offers a lifetime warranty on basically every bare tool they make and it’s not because they build sub par kit. There are a couple tools that don’t have the lifetime, grinders are one of them, understandably. I invested in this platform when the triple hammer impact driver came out in 2018 and haven’t looked back. This was one of the first few power tools of theirs I purchased, it even has the Hitachi mold on the side and hasn’t skipped a beat since. I’m a commercial plumbing mechanic and I give it a decent little workout in all applications specific to my line of work. The performance is top notch, it has done everything I’ve needed to do from tapcons, half inch holes for set pins to 1” holes through galvanized steel and concrete for anchoring systems that support large diameter pipe. It’s comfortable in my hands and outfitted with plenty of rubber over-mold in places that receive the most wear. The LED light is plenty to see the area you are drilling into, even in poorly lit areas. There are 3 settings to choose from. Drill, hammer and hammer drill. There’s a button you press in at the end of the knob you control settings with before you turn the knob, this feature keeps the selector in place while working. I will say, this also does a great job chipping, whether that’s concrete or more specific smaller applications like tile, this makes pretty easy work of mostly anything you would use it around your property for. Like I said earlier, that’s to be expected for a tool built for contractor grade use. If that’s not your cup of tea and you’re looking for a battery platform for smaller tasks, there’s plenty cheaper options. But you The only complaint I will mention here, is there’s no rafter hook, which I always find disappointing. Any type of hammer drill and or saw needs a bigger type hook to keep your investment off the ground. I alleviated this issue with a gear tie that I leave wrapped around the handle so I can hang it on a beam, ladder, scissor lift, etc while not in use. Finally, my one complaint, this thing needs a rafter hook to keep your investment off the ground. I alleviated the issue with a gear tie that I leave wrapped around the bottom of the handle for hanging on a beam, ladder, lift, etc while not in use.
