20th Century Day by Day

Count me as one more who thinks this book is a terrific resource. I had the 1987 version and was so happy to find this completed version that covers the entire century. My family and guests of all ages pull this book off the shelf repeatedly to look up certain people, events, or periods of time and are always satisfied with the amount of information given and with the clear and accessible writing. It seems to be about as trustworthy and complete as one could hope for, but the bonus is that it is so much FUN!! No one can ever look up one item and close it up. It is easy to lose hours whether you're just browsing or following one topic for a deeper understanding of what happened. The index is very helpful as is the threading system which leads you to the next subject matter item within the book on whatever topic you are reviewing. And I love that the editors understand the difference between what enormously impacted history and facts that are fun or interesting. Stories of large historical significance are given the page space, photos and text that one would expect, but the book is peppered throughout with smaller items and photos regarding art, movies, television, books, fashion, celebrities, etc., so that you really feel like you are there in the time about which you are reading. Two more cool features - a complete list of Olympics medalists are provided for each year that Olympics were held; and, the beginning of each decade is marked with a print of a painting that refers to what is arguably the most important event or the dominating mood of that decade, and I thought that they were all well-chosen. Overall, a fun, uesful, and fascinating book.

I got this Century book day by day for my friend and he reads it every day, hours at a time and then discusses it with me every night. This book is one in a million and you want to get it for yourself and your children as it has so much history that it is amazing. This book he says is his Bible and I know what he is talking about. This is the most interesting book of history that I have ever looked at. Between 1-10 I would give it a 20. Very happy that I found this book and will always keep it close.

I bought this for my son who loves history. He loves how it is broken down by day.

When I was a kid I would read this book. It was great entertainment and very educational at the same time. There is a calendar for each page and next to the calendar they get more in depth with a few of the highlights from that month.

What can I say? The book is an incredible collection of every notable historical event in the last 100 years.The BEST part, to me, is the "chain reference" feature. When you get to the bottom of an article (about, say, the completion of the Hindenburg), there is a small date in italics at the end which points you to the next article concerning the Hindenburg. This is OUTSTANDING for following a chain of events through history.GREAT reading for knowledge or leisure!

Amazing book - a must read for anyone wanting an overview of the 20th century!

This is a fantastic book ! I found it so interesting to be able to look through the whole century, much of which was in my lifetime, and to be able to see the patterns, and the progress of politics and culture

For the most part the book is fine (arrived ahead of time), but there are a number of pages torn out, which wasn't mentioned in the description. It would've been nice to know that ahead of time, though I might've still bought the item since 95% of it is fine.

Great reference book, ideal for just flicking through looking at some of the defining moments of the 20th century, great for a coffee table
