Just WOW!
This is much more like a "cake" than a traditional Spanish Pan De Higo (which is what I was exploring when I found this panforte). This is quite different, but it's absolutely DELECTABLE!!! It's very nutty (lots of walnuts), and the figs are whole, not pressed or ground up, as typical of Spanish type fig cake. It's made with whole wheat flower, so the consistency is different...but surprisingly perfect! I don't even now how to describe how good this is. It's like nothing I've ever had before. This was the best $25 I've spent in a LONG time!!!

The fresh product is delicious. This was old and stale.
I used to work for a company who imported these so I know what they are supposed to look and taste like. When they are fresh, they are outstanding. This was stale and hard, the chocolate was “bloomed”. It was gross and inedible. While I highly recommend Marabissi products for their high quality delicious products, I do not recommend purchasing through Amazon as this was clearly sitting in a warehouse for god knows long. Find an Italian gourmet store who carries them instead.

Not well constructed...
First, this was a softer Panforte than I'm used to.Then I thought the chocolate would be in the cake. No, the whole thing with it's rice paper was dipped in chocolate.Normally, not a terrible thing. But the chocolate was very thin, and did not stick well to the rice paper. When I cut or broke a section off the cake, the chocolate shattered into little pieces and flew everywhere. With room temperature of over 80 deg F (28 deg C) it instantly melted. So, it was very messy.Tasted OK.

Moldy
Love panforte, delicious in Italy —but sometimes difficult to get pristine quality shipped from Italia. This one was moldy, although not yet near expiration date.

Very gritty texture
I AM A MAJOR LOVER OF PANFORTE AND HAVE EATEN IT FOR 60+ YEARS SO I AM VERY FAMILIAR WITH ITS PROPER TASTE. BECAUSE IT WAS THE ONLY BRAND STILL AVAILABLE, I DECIDED TO ORDER FOR THE FIRST TIME AS CHRISTMAS GIFTS MARABISSI PANFORTE TORTA CIOCCOLATO FOR THREE FRIENDS WHO I DO NOT SEE FREQUENTLY. RECENTLY I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT MY FRIENDS AND LEARNED FROM ALL THREE THAT THE PANFORTE HAD AN UNPLEASANT AND GRITTY TEXTURE. NONE OF THEM FINISHED THE PANFORTE NOR FELT COMFORTABLE TELLING ME AS IT WAS A GIFT AND THEY DID NOT WANT TO SEEM UNAPPRECIATIVE. I THEN EMAILED THE PROVIDER, JR MUSHROOMS AND SPECIALTIES, EXPLAINING THE ISSUE AND WHY I DID NOT CONTACT THEM SOONER. I ALSO COPIED AMAZON.I NEVER HEARD FROM EITHER OF THEM.CAUTION-BE AWARE OF THE RETURN/COMPLAINT POLICIES BEFORE YOU ORDER. IT WAS NOT THE FACT THAT I DID NOT RECEIVE ANY CREDIT BUT MORE THAT NEITHER AMAZON NOR JR MUSHROOM NEVER HAD THE COURTESY TO REPLY.THE TIME LAPSE SHOULD NOT HAVE AFFECTED THEIR QUALITY AS PANFORTE WERE ORIGINAALLY MADE AS NOURISHMENT FOR THE CRUSADERS BECAUSE THEY LAST LONG, MOST PROBABLY BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN MAINLY DRIED FRUITS AND NUTS.

Wow
Wow. This is one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life (the fig and walnut version), but I like them all in different ways.Don't stress about removing the paper on the underside. It's edible rice paper.Love these, and I'd be proud to gift them and introduce others to their pleasures.
