Perfect for Notching
This is a great tool for patternmakers and dressmakers alike. It's rather like a hole punch, only instead of punching a hole, it cuts a tiny rectangle. It's intended for patternmakers who need to mark the notches when they're designing a new pattern. However, it punches through fabric just as easily as paper, which makes it ideal for dressmakers who want an alternative to using a fabric pen to draw each and every notch. Just line up the notcher with the notch on your pattern and squeeze the handle--instant notches! You can cut right through the tissue, but I would recommend folding the pattern back before making the notch. It's a wise idea to place a dot of fabric glue, such as Fray Check, at the tip of each cut notch. This will prevent the fabric from fraying, so you don't end up with a hole in your seam allowance. Even taking that into account, it's still faster than using a fabric pen to draw the notches. My sewing students love the convenience!Note: I haven't tried the notcher on heavy fabrics yet, such as denim or twill, so I don't know how easily it will cut through those, but it works great on muslin and other lightweight fabrics.

Not just pattern scissors
I read many reviews of similar products and chose this one because of the number of positive reviews. I looked at several videos of people with "tube" channels, cutting notches on patterns and warning "do not use on your fabric". Why? I ordered them to cut seam match-up notches on vinyl coated faux leather and to notch the fabric to go around corners. They work fantastic! I no longer have to carefully use my scissors to carefully make notches in the fabric. One squeeze, with this notcher, an I have a perfect notch that cuts through the fabric with ease. I have no idea how they work on pattern material but for vinyl upholstery fabric, they are sharp and make perfect notches!

Because it is the worst product as it arrived with broken screws
Why? Because it is the worst product as it arrived with broken screws, and the best because it was the cheepest and most easily fixed. Not fixed wit more tiny screws that never will hold this kind of tool together or small rivets that may on not hold for a while, but I know this is the best notcher now because for the lowest price and a small amount of JB Weld liquid steel epoxy on the punch plate and the spring pins and a day in the sun to dry know this will and does work fine for cutting that thin pattern paper. Other than arriving broken and unusable, with some JB Weld and a few strokes on the flat of the die punch it now will work just fine for the tissue paper, not the fabric as this is only for your notches to line up to your marks. This is not a Sawzall or for any other cutting tasks. It's still pricey for such poor quality but if you are sewing you may just have to make it work as best you can. The manufacturer should just skip the screws and go with high strength liquid steel, it would turn our better and be cheaper to make. You will find out when you start to use it, those screws will not last. Put some JB Weld under the plate even if the screws are not broken yet and it will stay together without breaking or buy the way more expensive one. I am totally happy with mine and I knew it would have issues before I bought it, you now know too. Good luck and don't get down because it's so easy to fix it will be ok.

Works well, best used on thicker stock like chipboard
I just received it, it works nicely. The depth is slightly more than 1/4" though, closer to 5/16" but that shouldn't be too much trouble. If anyone is having issues, these seem to be made to cut thicker stock. I'm using it on chipboard and it cuts beautifully. But it doesn't cut on plain printer paper.I'd assume that you want to use something more sturdy like chipboard for patterns that you'll be using over and over again instead of just plain paper. These are perfect for that purpose.

Works well- notches paper and fabric
This works well to notch both paper patterns and cotton quilting fabric.

Fantabulous!
I didn't understand the importance of having a notcher until I used this one. Definitely is worth the price! Both the appearance and quality are there. If you buy it but don't like it, it would be weird.

So much easier for patterns
I was using a knife to cut out V's in my patterns for alignment. This makes alignment notches sooo much easier it's ridiculous. Works perfectly, couldn't be more pleased.
