Works!
Lock can be a little hard to unlock/re-lock, but I've found that the secret is to turn the key to the unlocked position, then insert the cable into the lock. You do need the key to re-lock.Cable feels strong and secure.I bought it as a lock for my motorcycle cover, and while it works, I ended up decided it was too short and to much work to put on every night. But I'm using it as my helmet lock now, and Its great!

I didn't buy this for a gun...
I have a hard time keeping the small amount of alcohol I have in my house hidden from people who seem to think that a non-drinker has no right to keep it (I use it for cooking). I decided I needed to lock it up. The problem was that I didn't have a locking cabinet. I have several cheap cabinets that have loop-type handles on them. I figured if I locked the handles together, that would do the trick. I looked long and hard for something that was just the right length. This lock is a couple of inches longer than I wanted, but it works beautifully. I put my alcohol, my prescription meds, and my tools in one of the cabinets, along with some miscellaneous items I needed to lock up and used this lock to lock the handles together. It isn't foolproof, of course, but it is enough. It is certainly enough to say "keep out" to any idiot. It also keeps them from getting into the cabinet before I catch them.

Working as a gate lock..
I am using this as a gate lock..I know..Not what it is intended to be used as..I have a steel gate that over the years does not line up the way it did in its younger years..Need to use a long shackle lock but I got tired of busting my knuckles trying to line up the lock and then getting the key in to unlock..This cable lock has just enough flex to allow me to get it through both the gate and post even with them no longer aligned ..This lock works differently than most traditional Master Locks because you need to have the key inserted to both unlock and to lock..This means that it is a two handed operation to both lock and unlock..A bit of a pain but this little lock is making much less of a pain than the traditional style lock..

Inexpensive, quality lock for almost all firearm designs
I was picking up a lever-action rifle, and as California law requires, had to bring along a new gun lock to take my Winchester home. I'd never owned a lever gun before, and wasn't sure if this cable lock would secure the action. And I didn't want any bare metal from the cable scratching the finish on my pretty new rifle.Fortunately, Masterlock took care of both concerns - the included manual showed how to use the lock with every type of action and firearm - from pump shotguns to semi-auto handguns to revolvers - including lever guns. The cable is also coated to prevent any metal-on-metal scraping.I don't have children or roommates, so I don't need to store my guns locked, but if I did... well if I did I'd buy a safe. But if I needed a way to secure my guns in my home and didn't have a safe, I'd feel very comfortable using this cable lock.

Keys kept getting stuck
The keys kept getting stuck the 5 times I tested it on the first day I received it. I’m surprised at Master Lock for having this defective lock. It seems sturdy and functional though. I won’t buy it again.

Perfect for my back gate.
My back gate has a hole in the latch for a lock. The hole is just a tiny bit too small for a standard combination style padlock size shackle to fit through. This lock's shackle is actually a twisted, protected cable. The lock itself is a full size smaller than what most people would think of as "standard" lock size, but is bigger than most airline luggage type locks. The shackle is as tough as a cable can get, and yet it is thin enough to fit easily through the hole on my gate latch. While I imagine it could be easily cut with a bolt cutter, it serves the purpose for which I bought it - to keep neighbors and kids out of my back yard. If either of those groups show up with bolt cutters, then I have a different problem.

If you live in California, these things are a legal necessity. The lock itself is 'ok'. When I first opened the package and tried to unlock the lock the key did not want to turn, at all. I thought the key was wrong or the lock was jammed.I ended up using a pair of pliers to give myself some extra leverage on the key and the lock did finally open. I sat and worked the lock mechanism back and forth for about an hour and now it locks and unlocks fairly reliably. I won't say smooth, but it functions.

CA DOJ Approved lock
I learned that a lot of handguns come with a lock so check before buying one. However, I have learned that this lock can be used to lock up cabinets with handles that you can slide the cable through or locking items together. This lock is keyed different but if you need to buy more than one of these, you have the option to buy this item with Keyed Same option so you can use the same key to open all of them. Works fine.
