Surprisingly Impressed
What a surprising film made for TV film from HBO made in 1990! Of course, since it's HBO, the movie immediately starts with an obligatory sex scene. But once we get that out of the way, we get into this film that really shows you what a nuclear war could be like, and it surprises by going places you don't think it's going to go! They don't play it safe! Don't expect crazy beautiful shots of nuclear explosions, but expect a gripping tale told and acted well. I can't believe how much I liked this movie. And of course there's feminism in it (which is annoying), but it's not nearly as bad as the brand of feminism we get these days. It actually feels like the real world and like conversations that could and probably do come up. Good stuff.

A Good Nuclear War Suspense Drama Told from Multiple Perspectives
I remember first watching this when it aired on HBO on its release date. I was at the edge of my seat wondering what each person or group would do based on what they knew from their point of view: the lone bomber plane; the wounded US President everyone thought dead; the war-mongering newly installed US President; and the strategic commanders who had to decide whether to launch nuclear weapons without all the necessary information to make an informed decision. All these people literally hold the fate of humanity in their hand, all the while trying to decide what they should do, what they're commanded to do, or what they want to do. It was a solid nail-biting suspense film that doesn't go into ideology, but what will doing what they're doing will save lives or preserve as much of their way of life as possible. Yes it's not high budget (it is a television movie at a time when HBO didn't have the budget to put on programming as they do now), and it's now predictable by today's standards. But it's one of those "what would you do" stories if you were in the place of these individuals tasked with making life-or-death decisions. Having said that, the tension is mounted by first-class performers: Martin Landau as the President. Darren McGavin as the new President. James Earl Jones, Jeffrey DeMunn and Rip Torn as the high-ranking, surviving military commanders. And Powers Boothe and Rebecca DeMornay as bomber pilots responsible for "pushing the button" if commanded to do so, who have, IMHO, a backstory that's not too relevant to the events as play. But I understand why it's there. It's a solid drama that's been done so often it's a literal cliche. But the fact it's told from multiple perspectives along with terrific acting is what makes me watch it over and over again. I'm glad I bumped into this again.

Planet Of The Apes, Baby!
I like these type of WW3-ELE stories. Even so, my first--mistaken!--impression was 'Seen This Before.' Just a redo of 'Failsafe' and 'Dr. Strangelove.' But I figured I'd watch it anyway, seeing the great James Earl Jones, the great Powers Boothe, and the great Martin Landau were in it. And for the first half-hour, it is just rerun material. But then the movie takes off to new ground. The dynamic between bomber pilots Powers Boothe and Rebecca De Mornay is such a beautiful twist on 'Woke' (or whatever they called 'woke' back in 1990). Boothe is Mr. Macho, De Mornay is hardcore G.I. Jane. But when push comes to shove, the Yin and Yang combine as God Intended - to create life, not destroy it. "If we're lucky, we'll get the firing squad" Mr. Macho says to G.I. Jane after jointly deciding to disobey the stupid fake President's stupid orders to destroy all life on Earth -- woke pinko atomic bomb pilots that they are. If you thought the cockpit scenes in 'Dr. Strangelove' were intense, you ain't seen nothing yet.in a brilliant callout to the black humor of 'Dr. Strangelove' (remember, Jones was in that film) the whipped Executive Officer offers Admiral Vader a filtered cigarette for his last smoke before dying in nuclear fire, and Vader screams "this is a girl's cigarette!' Before Vader can force choke the girly man, the woman third-in-command steps up and gives him a real man's cancer stick. I don't know if that scene is woke or not, but it was funny. But again we see complaints that 'Dawn' is left-wing Hollywood propaganda. How? Dawn' tells the approving story of a military coup against the civilian government! Leftist propaganda would portray the military as amoral Neo-Nazis. Instead, 'Dawn' lovingly portrays the U.S. military as moral and life-saving. If this is liberal, so is 'Atlas Shrugged.' Whatever 'Dawn' Is, it's definitely not Left-wing propaganda.I give 'Dawn's Early Light' five stars on its own merit and another five stars for living up to 'Faiisafe' and 'Dr. Strangelove.'

Recommended.
Probably not suitable, for small children.Cliche-ish. For example, some characters seemed blinded by their prejudices and, so, just wanted to go to war - despite probable repercussions. Other characters could not follow orders due to their left-wing ideology. (Opposite situation to that portrayed, in "Fail Safe" - which, incidentally, was mandatory viewing, when I covered nuclear politics, at university.)Still, the story was largely-entertaining.
