This is volume Six of the Defenitive Steve Canyon collection. We get the years 1957 and 1958 collected in this beautiful format . Landscape format (Wider then Tall) with three black and white daily strips to a page , while the Sundays command a full page in beautiful restored color. Bruce Canwell provides another excellent introduction. The Introduction is a heavily illustrated thirteen pages and provides background on both the strips collected in this volume, the real life events that served as inspiration and Milton Caniff's life at the time of composition.In the last volume Poteet Canyon , Steve's "Kissing Cousin" was introduced. Steve becomes this High School girl's legal guardian and we get stories focusing around Poteet. In this volume Poteet actually starts to take over the strip as the focal character and we get many more storylines focusing on her. We also see a more domesticated Steve Canyon strip. Traditionally Steve's adventures criss cross the globe but for his 11th and 12th year collected here he remains stateside with only one excursion to the Gulf Of Mexico for War Games.The first storyline focuses on Poteet's formation of a Basketball Team , which she also coaches. Summer Olson and Copper Calhoon return for this story .The second story is about a Secret Admirer for Poteet , who turns out to be some kind of Predator. Since it is 1957, no mention of Sexual Abuse or Rape can be mentioned instead the boy is black mailing Poteet for a kiss. If this was set today I am sure the stakes would be much higher.The third storyline finally focuses on Steve as he is assigned to escort the deposed Princess Sunflower. We also are reintroduced to Doagie Hogan , Sunflower's lead supporter who has his own agenda. Logan's plan is to put the Princess back in power by re-invading Red China and possibly starting World War Three. This was a very timely concern for 1957 America.The fourth storyline returns it's focus to Poteet who has developed Anorexia Nervosa. This is pretty ground breaking for it's time. This story does end rather strangely with Poteet hitch hiking across the country by her self.In the next storyline Poteet and her new girlfriend Scooter McGruder meet Colonel Index and his wife Delta who has just been released from prison. Another strange ending as Delta just flees after being shown kindness by the girls.As 1958 starts we get a Steve storyline as both The Air Force and The Navy are playing War Games in the Gulf Of Mexico. When Miss Mizzou shows up in her trench coat and nothing else all hell breaks loose as both sides think she is a spy.Next we return to a Poteet storyline. The creation of a local Polo team using horses borrowed from Happy Easter. Poteet becomes very jealous when Steve starts spending time with Scotter's Mom. In a strange epilogue to the story we are told Steve had to spank Poteet's High School backside. Now days that would not only not be Politically Correct but might also be considered Sexual Abuse.In the next story Steve and Poteet move to the newly opening Air Force Academy. Poteet meets a young Airman who wants desperately to enter the Academy but can not for some secret reason.Finally in concluding storyline we re-meet Actress Savannah Gay. When we first met her in the previous volume , I thought she was my least favorite girlfriend for Steve. She had no redeeming qualities except being attractive. In this meeting she shows slightly more character in helping disabled veterans. But still she is mostly just trouble, and departs with no explanation. Bob Hope does make a couple unnamed cameos in this Christmas themed story.This is another excellent volume that deserves to be in everyone's collection. While there may have existed a better illustrator , it is hard to find a better story teller Milton Caniff.Highly Recommended.
