Do research before you decide to buy

I was looking for a basic, smart thermostat for our cabin so I could monitor the temperature over the winter in the event of heating issues or someone kicking the door in and it freezing inside; and also, because we turn the heat way down while not there, I could turn it back up on the way there and have it already warm when we arrive. As I read reviews on this thermostat, which I kept going back to when I reviewed others, it seemed like most complaints were about needing a "c" wire to the thermostat and Google not disclosing that. I can't speak to that as I'm not sure it's absolutely necessary, I knew nothing of wiring a thermostat to a furnace. I went into it though assuming I needed a "c" wire and researched different ways to do it. There were other complaints like displayed temperature inaccuracies, but at the end of the day I went with the basic Google Nest in sand color (looks pink to me). I'm glad I spent the time researching ahead of time and, so far, glad I didn't listen to the "don't buy this product" reviews. Does exactly what I want it to do, easy to use, displays perfectly accurate temperature, and was easy to install (again, glad I researched quite a bit and was prepared). Now for my install experience: Just for the record, my cabin furnace is heat only, so I only really needed 2 low voltage wires from the thermostat to the furnace. The existing cable had 3 wires however, one of which (the green one) was not hooked up at either end. FYI, take the advice of the "how to" videos and take a picture of the wire locations on the old thermostat before removing them, and make sure the furnace breaker is off too. The green wire, as I researched, is usually for operating the furnace fan separate from when it's on for heating or cooling, something I, and probably most people, don't use. The white and red wires were hooked to their corresponding letter coded (R&W) spaces on the thermostat and furnace. I had purchased a plug-in 24v transformer with a long set of wires, based on my previous research, to use as the "c" wire, which I learned supplies power to the thermostat. I intended on plugging it into a nearby outlet, running the wire alongside some doorframe trim, which would hide the wire, and into the wall behind the new thermostat. This, I think, would have worked just fine. I also learned though, from watching another "how-to" video just before I started the project, that all furnaces have a 24v connection space along with where all the other thermostat wires would go. So I just hooked the unused green wire to the "c", or 24v, spot on the furnace and to the "c" connector on the Nest thermostat. *The Nest comes with wire identifying stickers and I did label this wire on both ends to indicate it's now the power wire. Once the wiring was done, turned the breaker back on and followed the install directions from the Google Home app. The only minor issues I had was that the display was in Celsius, not Fahrenheit, and it took me awhile to figure out that this needed to be changed via the phone app, not the thermostat. There may be a way, but I couldn't figure that out. Also, was a little nervous because of the previous reviews I read when the initial temperature displayed about 4-5 degrees above the actual temperature, but by the time I cleaned everything up, it was right on. In Google's defense, it did indicate it takes a little bit to adjust itself. Very happy with it and glad I picked this one-so far anyhow.

Easy to install and looks great

Hubby and I replaced our old thermostat in about 30 minutes. The app makes the installation a breeze. It walks you step by step. It integrates well with other Google products we have. It also qualifies for a rebate. Amazon had the best price for this model and color.

Better than the original

I'm completely satisfied with my new Google Nest thermostat. Installation was a snap as it replace an original Nest that I’ve had for several years. That said, even a new installation is very simple. Enough so that most folks will have no trouble at all.The new design looks much better on my wall, a definite upgrade from the original Nest thermostat. More importantly, the new Nest seems much more responsive to temperature changes than the older model. Haven’t had it long enough to see a difference in electricity billing but I’m betting it will be at least a bit lower.I recommend the Google Nest thermostat for anyone looking for energy savings and a good looking upgrade.

Don't buy ANY Nest until Google fixes one of its 'features'

I bought this pretty pinkish version of the next because it was more than half the price of an Ecobee I was considering putting in my new home. But stupid f^%#ng Google adds a feature that renders this stupid thing and all Next thermostats GARBAGE.The Nest can tell when you're not home and turn itself way down to save you money. Sounds like a great feature, right? GOOD LUCK if you want to turn it off. Why would you want to do that?My neighbor had to suddenly leave town. Our town is desert California. She has a pet parakeet and solar panels. So she can leave the AC on all day and keep the bird cool. Right?WRONG. The Nest turns the AC practically off to 'save' money. The room the bird was in had to be 92 degrees. I looked it up (on Google, ironically) and that's enough to kill a bird.I have another neighbor with a Nest. She is a nurse that works the night shift. So she comes home during the day to sleep while her kids are at school. So there's no movement in the house. Guess what the Nest does? Turn off the AC. Today is going to be 108 degrees. See the problem yet?So, you say what's the big deal? Just turn off that function, you say? Google makes it VERY DIFFICULT to do. Even for someone with much geekery like myself. What you have to do to render your Nest a 'manual' thermostat is impossible for like 98% of the consumer public. This behavior reminds me of Apple. We own the products you bought from us and we'll tell you what you can and can't do with them. How f&^%ing hard is it to put a software switch on the phone. One button and BOOM you're in manual mode?!?Here's YET another problem. When I pulled out my old clunky system and installed the Nest, the unit is so poorly designed it doesn't mask the connection point. That is you can see around the sides where it hooks up. Google's solution? Buy a Google Nest Trim kit for $15. A piece that should have been included for $4 more. That aside, when you go to install it you, you have to FIRST detach the entire unit from the wires. Many may feel comfortable doing this but I don't, and -- MORE IMPORTANT -- why not simply offer this kit in two pieces that magnetically latch together SO THAT you need no disconnect anything?!?These poorly conceived solutions are why I absolutely regret this purchase and recommend NO ONE buy this until the phone app is fixed. In fact I wouldn't buy a Google Pixel based upon this OBNOXIOUS CORPORATE OVER-REACH.

You must order the C wire!

I have a simple, radiant floor system, no gas furnace nor HVAC. I replaced a GEN1 Nest with this GEN4. It was not possible to get it to see everything and display correctly during installation. The app and online reviews said I had to use the C Wire adapter and physically add the two extra white wires - which I immediately ordered from Amazon. And waited 2 more days to get. Then that tranformer arrived DOA, so I improvised and finally got the Nest 4 thermostat working now. Its compatible with my Gen1 and the app works nicely with both. Now that it's installed properly, it's really great!!
