Not Always in the Mood: The New Science of Men, Sex, and Relationships

Male reader here.Despite having a female author, it felt like the book was written from a male perspective.The anecdotal style use of research and practical examples put many of the myths into context in an understandable and interesting way.Found the book more and more engaging as the later myths build on the early ones, providing greater depth.Not just a sex book. Has great deal of overlap with a relationship perspective between intimate partners that I hope will be helpful in building greater understanding and intimacy with my spouse.The research in this book shows that men and women share more overlap in their views regarding sex and intimacy than most of us realize.Nice work challenging assumptions!

As a wife to a wonderful man and a mother of two boys, this book made me examine my unconscious beliefs about what it means to be a "man" in our current culture. Sadly, despite thinking of myself as someone who doesn't label people according to gender, I found that I had somehow assumed that what I had been taught about "what men really want" was true of all men. This book really challenged me to view men as individuals on a spectrum when it comes to relationships and sex. I highly recommend this book to anyone (man or woman) who.is struggling to make sense of male sexuality.

This was a good read

I don't understand why the publisher agreed to publish this. The author is not an authority as she claims to be, and she doesn't say anything in chapters 2 and up that she didn't say in chapter 1. It's not worth it.

I was fortunate to hear the author recently at a conference in Toronto. I was specifically interested in the way she presented a completely new approach to men's sexuality. And now having read this book, I want to applaud the author for translating her ability to draw the reader in to her research in the same way she did live and in person. Any book that deals with the myths of men's sexuality and makes you see the world from a new and well researched perspective is worth reading.

Murray's premise is that we are managing our relationships with a serious a misunderstanding of male desire. A sex researcher, she writes in a very accessible way about the science of male desire, the actual research into what men want (and don't), emotions and more. A fun but also highly informative read. I will never see my relationship the same way!

We've spent the last 50 years studying female sexuality in all of it's complexities - now it is time we honor male sexuality to be just as nuanced, complicated and socially rooted as we know female sexuality to be. We're all in this together, and the main sexual struggles of men and women alike are rooted in myths that harm and limit us all. This book does a great job naming and dismantling the myths that drive men's sexual struggles and isolation.

As a male, I find it refreshing that a female would take on the intricacies of male sexuality. I personally find it courageous and refreshing. We can gain a lot of perspective that may go un-researched or even noticed by our own gender-specific notions. I respect the author's work and would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. Great read!

Do yourself a favour and read this uber important book! It's refreshing to see a researcher with an academic background make her material more accessible for practical situations, for hetero couples, for daily issues. Murray's desire to untangle these problematic and persistent misconceptions Canadian society has about cis men and their sexuality is contagious. Once you finish the first chapter, you will start looking at male sexuality (and in turn, female sexuality) and in a much more compassionate and complex way and your understanding of how you perceive male sexuality will never be the same.

Great book! Every couple should read this very informative book. It really provides great insight into the true feelings men have in relationships and sex.

This was an enlightening read, and should be required for both men and women alike. I appreciated the in-depth research and personal anecdotes and stories that went into making the people in this book and the issues feel real.
