Good for canoe trip
I wanted something I could use on canoe trips to the BWCA or Quetico park in Ontario. Primary concern is battery life and durability. I did as much research as I could and ended up buying this model. I've taken it on two trips so far and it has worked pretty well. Here are the specifics:1 - mounting. I did not mount anything. I placed the transducer in a bit (1/2 cup or so) of water directly on the floor of the canoe (Kevlar) and this appeared to work fine. I put the display on a pack in front of me and that worked ok. It would be nice to have some sort of holder which mounts on the thwart, but I was unable to locate such a contraption.2 - batteries. I got around 7 hours of life from a new set of batteries. I made some adjustments to the settings of the device assuming they might affect power consumption, but I don't really know what the effects are. I set the display to B/W, slowest refresh (10%), 200Khz, Fish alarm on, depth alarm off, surface clarity, sensitivity others all left at default values. Would be nice to have some guidance on these settings. One useful thing to know for campers is that the AAA batteries start out around 5.9V and last in the device until 3.8V or so (it's shown on the display). However, these "spent" batteries are still suitable for use in headlamps so you can plan on using them there.I concur with other reviewers that the most useful feature is knowing the depth and changes in depth. However, that being said I would add that the fish finder very often found fish where and when we did. If nothing else, it adds a little excitement to hear the beep and know the depth of fish.I used this product in water which was high 60's F and between 3-100 ft. I didn't take any particular precautions with it. Stored it in a little sack in my backpack, got rained on a bit, seems to be holding up.Overall I think this was a valuable tool on our trip. My trip mates concur. We found several places in the "middle of the lake" where we caught the fish because we could see drop offs or humps with the finder.I took this out on a local lake before my trip just to get comfortable with it. I think it's pretty easy to use. I left most of the settings as is, though I think it is set up for dual (side by side displays of same results using different frequencies) display and I don't understand why anyone would use this mode. The auto depth setting works well and tells you most of what you need to know.I did not receive anything for this review. I just hope it helps someone else who's contemplating buying one of these.

Kayak Fishing salt and freshwater
Works great for for kayak fishing in salt and freshwater on an inflatable sea eagle. The transducer has been dropped a few times and tugged hard, but hasn't broken yet. Battery life (2 x AA) is good. Bring a spare set of batteries just in case. Lots of display features. Play around with them to figure out what works best for you. It shows relative sizes of fish and depth. Catch a few fish to interpret the symbols. I found information about depth and bottom structure more helpful to get strikes than just the presence of fish. The display isn't waterproof, but so far no issues. (that caused me some real concern). Mounting the transducer on an inflatable is a fun and creative project. The first attempt was a disaster, but the latest version of the rig is great (looks good too). Be careful with the battery cover, it slips off easily. Chasing flocks of birds, trolling vast expanses, or randomly casting the wide open ocean is not really an option when paddling a couple miles out to sea. It's hard work. Do some homework first (and that's more than reading the latest charter boat fishing reports). When you see a 13 ft. inflatable kayak bobbing over a spot on the ocean, forget looking for the party boats. S/he's on fish. They probably got there with the help of the Signstek Fish Finder.

Perfect little Fish Finder for Kayaks!
Excellent little fish finder! Purchased for my wife to use while Kayak fishing. Uses 4 AA batteries. They will only last a few hours, so make sure you don't leave it on while fishing. Find your spot and turn it off; check it again every 20-30 minutes. The system has it's own volt meter which will tell you how low the batteries are; you can set it to alarm when it drops to 4.0 V. Kinda nice.Convenient neck strap! just wear the device like a necklace. It's not that heavy and it doesn't get thrown around while casting. The sensor's cord is a lot longer than it needs to be for Kayak fishing, but it's not a problem, just keep it wrapped up to keep it out of the way.It measure's water temperature (C/F), does a great job of locating depth, you can set it to beep for small, medium, large or any fish (although I'm not sure what the size thresholds are)I would recommend this Fish Finder, especially for those who are beginners or those fishing from kayaks.

Great for portability.
At first, I opened it up and thought, "This screen is way too small." However, I decided to give it a chance out on the water. It's completely fine. I bought this fish finder for ice fishing as well as open water on my small raft. It works amazing! I really enjoy the fact that it shows the fish depth as well as how deep in the water you are. It was fairly easy to strap to my Minn Kota motor with some zip ties. I got one where the transducer was scratched. Instead of waiting for me to complain. The company contacted me before I even got the fish finder and notified me that I may have a scratched transducer. They gave me the option of getting a $10 refund, or getting a new transducer shipped to me from China. I went with the new option. That being said, I have tried the scratched transducer and it works completely fine. Get ready to catch some fish, this thing is amazing. It's light weight and extremely portable!

Great little space-saving portable depth finder
Bought this for a fly-in fishing trip in Canada. Product worked great. Attached transducer to a small 2-inch wide board and C-clamped to the back of the boat. Once the angle of transducer was adjusted properly, it read accurately at all speeds on a 14' aluminum boat with a 6 HP motor. It was great to know the depth and bottom structure of the lake constantly (many large rock piles in Canada lakes). Another nice feature is that is runs on four AAA batteries. Doesn't take much packing space to bring enough batteries for a 5-day trip. Plan on one set of batteries per day if you run it all day. The display also indicated the current battery voltage so you know when they are getting run down.Right out of the box the transducer had scuff/scratch marks on the bottom of it as other reviewers have noted, but they don't seem to effect performance or accuracy.
