How quickly and decisively the exact hues of our surrounding flora change through the year. Our northern growing season is quite abbreviated; perhaps that is why we experience rapidly modulating greens in our foliage. Spring's green is intense, brilliant, and fragile. Early summer will be attired in a darker, sturdier hue, and by August we find our flowers accessorized by deep, dowager green that is slightly gloomy to the eye and definitely frumpy in tone. The beauty of our northern surroundings is a drama with such variable staging that many gardeners can accurately date a photograph by the shades of green in the frame.
