Q: My front door is medium oak. i bought dark retique it because i wanted to stain it a dark oak. will this work or do i need to get the light retinue it

I have never used the dark retique it so it is hard to say for sure. With my limited knowledge (I used the light one once) I would say go with medium or dark and not the light. The best thing to do is to experiment. I was redoing two bathrooms that had the exact same vanities. In one case I was completely replacing one of the vanities so I could experiment with it. I painted the light wood retique it and then bought about four different stains from Lowes (the little Minwax cans that are about $4 each.) and tried them to see which look I liked the best. I know this is tougher in you case, but if you can find anything that is similar to your door experiment on that. By the way, I am not good with creative things and redecorating at all so I thought for sure I was going to ruin he vanity and just have to paint over the whole thing, but it came out quite nice and that was a surprise for me.

Quart 1-2 coats depending on amount of use. High traffic 2 coat minimum

I would get the light wood and also dark wood and graining tools. Ultimately, the color is going to be the color of stain. Quality counts.

Wax will always be your last step. Poly over paint and for added protection, wax over poly. Paint Poly Wax :)
