Very good read
I read the first book in this trilogy and just had to the purchase this and the following book.I could hardly put them down as I was absorbed by the story. Though the characters are fictitious you can't help but believe they are real as the description of the fight against the enemy troops and the weather seemed so real.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and did not stop going onto book 3.I so want these to continue Mr McGregor.

Eastern Front gem
Fiction based on fact, superbly put together. This second book in the Eastern Front trilogy is even better than the first and as an avid reader of non-fiction books on this subject I cannot fault it. The story of the small group of German and axis soldiers grips from the start and with the detailed descriptions of the weather. the cold and the groups hostile surroundings coupled with the desperate actions against the Russian soldiers make an excellent read, best fiction I have read on this subject.

The harsh reality of a brutal battle
This is the second in a series of books about the battle of Stalingrad. The story continue to be told from predominantly the German front line soldiers’ perspective. The story is both grim and brutal in its telling. There is no glory here, only the grim reality of survival in a frigid environment with fighting going on in the filthy sewers beneath the city. Look forward to the next book.

Excellent book and story
The characters in this book are brought to life extremely vivid and human. It's a testament to soldiers every where that not every soldier was or is a blood thirsty murdering scumbag.

One of the best
This book and the others in the series are at the top of my book list. I have read many books, it is what I enjoy. This ranks at the very top of many.

Better than the first book!
Took almost 2 books to develop some of the characters. Writing got better in this second book on the events following the Russian counter offensive north and south of Stalingrad in late 1942. The first book was almost difficult to read. I'll buy the third book shortly, just to see what happens to the main characters.

There is no glory in war.
Real war from a soldiers perspective. These men were not Nazis, just German regulars fighting for survival in a place where no prisoners were taken. Our Russian allies were capable of extreme atrocities, not only against the hated Germans but civilians as well as their own men. A gripping and enlightening read.
