New York Review of Books Stoner

The CD is an excellent rendering of the book, which I had read before. A somewhat gloomy delivery, but that's how it should be in this tale of a university teacher in 1930s America, but with glimmers of humour and resignation. It reminded me of more men I have known than I would have thought possible, so if you have lived all your life in academe, beware of the parallels.

I have been reading a lot lately, fiction and non-fiction. After a lengthy hiatus, I have been reading classics, alone or in concert with my kids who I have joined in their English class syllabus. Most of what I have read has been unengaging and ultimately forgettable. I wander from page to page sometimes drifting off waiting to just get through to the end (The Sheltering Sky, all of Graham Greene's novels, One Hundred Years of Solitude, all come quickly to mind). The same cannot be said about Stoner. The writing is perfect; spartan, clean, with such economy and perfection it can't be explained. This is a master at work, perhaps unlike any other. The only novel I can compare this to, in terms of its utter perfection, is the Great Gatsby. And I suspect that if I were to reread the Great Gatsby tomorrow I might be convinced that Stoner surpasses it.

John Williams must be the best author I’d never heard of. It’s been a while since a novel blew me away like this. Based on the description, I was prepared for a dull read, I couldn’t have been more wrong. A reflection on the unexamined life, a meditation on the nature of the American male in the early 20th Century, a story about a quietly dysfunctional family - there’s a lot going on here and yet somehow it all comes together in an effortlessly simple and moving story. Stoner is devastating and beautiful. Not one wasted page; five stars.

"Stoner" ist ein Buch, das in den 60er Jahren geschrieben wurde. Die Sprache des Romans ist sehr klar, genauso wie die Gedanken. Die Geschichte ist sehr vielschichtig, die Figuren komplex angelegt. Zwar fand ich die Stimmung etwas bedrückend, aber trotzdem macht es Freude, das Buch zu lesen. Es überzeugt einfach auf allen Gebieten. Im Zentrum der Handlung steht William Stoner, dessen Leben vom Zeitpunkt seines Eintritts in die Hochschule bis zu seinem Tod verfolgt wird. Die Literatur ist seine große Liebe, die ihn als junger Student gepackt hat und nicht mehr loslässt. Selbst als er in hochschulpolitische Probleme gerät, hält er an seinen Idealen fest und lässt sich nicht verbiegen. Selbst dann nicht, als er dafür seine zweite große Liebe opfern muss: eine Frau, mit der er arbeiten und lesen, über Literatur sprechen und sich wohlfühlen kann. Diesen zwei Lieben steht Stoners eigentliche Frau entgegen, die alles dafür tut, um ihn zu zerstören -- allerdings während sie nach Außen hin immer einen Schein der Harmonie aufrecht erhalten will. Das zu lesen macht einen fast fertig, so kalt ist es. Aber Stoner hat seine andere Welt und findet stets in ihr, was ihm in anderen Bereichen genommen wird. So ist er keine wirklich traurig-tragische Gestalt, sondern jemand, der seine Bestimmung gefunden hat und ihr nachgeht. Ein gutes Buch.

Una gran novela de un gran escritor. La brevedad del texto encierra una gran obra, probablemente su obra magna, de un autor poco prolífico, con una prosa magnífica, de ricos matices.
