Fantastic little light! Plus, my HACK to make it switch operated
I initially bought a larger light thinking that if I spent more money, it would be nicer. Then my daughter wanted a light for college, and I just got her this small one since her apartment doesn't have room for a bunch of appliances. She loved it! So I bought another one for myself! I liked it so much that I bought one (and some polishes) to give as a gift set to my sister. It works just as well as my bigger light. It turns itself on when you insert your fingers and stays on until the timer is up. We use it for gel polishes, gel topcoats over stamping, and gel and polygel nails ( Polygel is sooo simple, I love that stuff, btw!) It works for all those. She does remove the paper form and cures the underside of her gel nails another round. It is a little shallow, sometimes I bang my toe off the back when I put my foot in it (yes, it works for toes, too!) If I angle it more like the line of my toes, they all fit fine. The only thing I miss on it is a switch. Sometimes if you move a little while you are curing, the signaling mechanism "thinks" you removed you hand and turns off. Then you have to re-trigger it to turn on again, which starts the timer all over again. This isn't a problem if you are just laying your hand on a table and have this over them, but if you pick it up to do an edge or underside, or simply just lift your fingers enough off of the table, it turns off. I noticed it first when we were doing nail swatch sticks . They must be too thin to trigger the "on" so we just put an emery board near the signal light to trigger it on. Then the timer and light would start. You can't really do that if you are holding it in the air, so I needed another solution.(HACK!:) what I did was use one of those little sliding webcam covers . I used the black ones. I got them for a computer, but had an extra one. They are perfect! the little hole can be left open if you want to use this light in the "normal way." But if you want it on without having to keep the signal triggered on the whole time, just slide it closed. Then it thinks your hand is in there even if it isn't. It turns off after the cycle, it doesn't just stay on the whole time, but it prevents accidental resets of the timer. If you need it on again, you just slide the switch back, then move it to closed again. It is easy to reach since the signal is near the front. It must be a little laser type light similar to a garage door mechanism. You can even see the tiny notch for it on the product photo near the inside front bottom left. There is one on the other side too so I guess when that beam across is broken, it triggers the light on. When the beam reaches the other side, the machine thinks it is empty and turns the light off.I just stuck the hole of the webcam cover over that, and the slider comes in from the back. Then the machine notices the beam is broken, the light triggers on and the internal timer begins. The cover is nice and small so it doesn't interfere with your hand or foot, and it has a sticky back already. So it just presses right on.Anyway, now it works even better for us. You may never use yours where you accidentally turn it off, so you won't need the webcam cover. But if you want a light with a switch, and don't want to pay a lot more for another model that has one, you can fix this one for less than a buck. And it isn't some taped on cardboard junky/rigged thing, it looks like it actually came designed that way! Polygelnail swatch sticksthose little sliding webcam covers
