Q: How can they be satin but made from Polyester ??

Satin is not a material, it is a type of weave. Some people believe that to be true satin it must be weaved from silk, but that is not the official definition. Typically satin is weaved from polyester when it is on the cheaper side, and silk when it is more expensive.

Q: What is the best way to wash these?

I washed on delicate, cold. Dried on a rack. One of the pillowcases a shredded along the horizontal and vertical seams. Unfortunately, I had ordered several bedding items for company coming to stay, I had opened the packages—but did not was until a few days before their arrival. (I now see that I have missed the return date by exactly 7 days). If you have purchased these particular pillowcases, hand wash them in cold and lay them flat to air dry.
