Is there a trick to the applicator? The lubricant is not coming out when i squeeze the bottle hard.

The red cap has a shutoff seal so you need to pull the cap up/away from the bottle to break the seal. You will hear a slight "pop". This enables the flow of the lubricant through the cap and tube assembly. Push it back down to close it up for safe storage.

Will this work for an elliptical?

No. I would also use it very sparingly on a treadmill. I made the mistake of over-using it and the silicon got on the band that connects the motor to the tread. The end result was slippage causing the treadmill to function poorly. I thought the motor burned out.
