1st cut into chunks ( it slices easily with a knife ). Using a double boiler on the stove is probably the best way to melt it but I put into a large glass measuring cup (for easy pouring after melting) and used the microwave. 30 seconds - stir gently, followed by 20 seconds - stir gently, and 20 more seconds.

Q: How to avoid the cooled soaps exuding what looked like glitter but felt like glycerin (clear, gel like)? I only added essential oil after melting.

You will need to buy soaps that specifically mention their ability to suspend essential oils, otherwise in my experience the extruding will always happen with the melting soap method. This is not an issue with the much more complicated soap making methods. I've found the clear glycerin soaps work better than the shea butter soaps if you are adding essential oils.
