How to pin down such an enigmatic artist as Serge Gainsbourg?
How to pin down such an enigmatic artist as Serge Gainsbourg? This book goes a long way towards capturing his charismatic and controversial character. Forming chapters around key albums, Allen easily weaves review with commentary- and he does not shy away from criticism. He tells the engaging story of an emerging artist who reached dizzy artistic heights, only to ‘characteristically snatch defeat from the jaws of victory’ p.231 through his many controversial words and actions. Allen’s writing style is full of cultural references, citing everything from Japanese Bunraku theatre to Heart of Darkness, Chopin to Kanye West. We get clear contextual insight into Gainsbourg’s life and loves, with descriptions such as ‘cymbal-smacking sibilance’ p.157 making his music sing off the page. I listened to the corresponding album as I read each chapter and thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Yes, it was eyebrow-raising at times (‘Je t’aime moi non plus’), even downright shocking (‘Lemon Incest’), but it was never dull. Add to this the poignant moments, where Allen details Gainsbourg’s self-sabotage through the creation of his alter ego Gainsbarre, and ripples are sent right through to the present day, as we recognise the dangerous pursuit of fame. Allen reflects that in death ‘he was to become her muse’ p.146, reversing the famous roles of Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, and indeed through this book Gainsbourg’s artistry is given a new life. In short, this is a fascinating insight into an artist who may not be so well known in this country, but who certainly deserves more than a second look. If you’re brave enough to discover more about the often-vilified Serge Gainsbourg, then this book is for you. Get ready for an interesting ride!

Brilliantly researched & hypnotically written
I have always found something hypnotically seductive in listening to/reading an enthusiast talk about something that they love. This is the difference between an enthusiast and a fanatic.A fanatic doesn’t care what you think; they just want to bang on.An enthusiast wants you to love what they love as much as they do and will work hard for your attention.I loved reading this book. I don’t particularly like French music, and I’m not that interested in Serge Gainsbourg as an artist or a man. In fact, I confess I knew nothing about him beyond what my mum told me about “Je t’aime moi non plus” or vague recollections of a pervy drunk in the 80s insulting Whitney Houston on telly)But the quality of the writing, the depth of the research and the cadence of the narrative of this book meant I read it in two sittings. Hooked.I would recommend it to anyone. So interesting. So distracting. So informative. The author clearly loves his subject, and wants you to love the subject too (not necessarily the man or his work but the story). You should read this. You won’t regret it.
