Fame was messed up.
Can’t really say if it is good or not. The frame was messed up where it was held in place. Seemed well built

MTD stripped steering: get BOTH shaft and bushing
My White-LT165 is really an MTD and uses this part. As others say, the basic design won't last forever. The teeth are not big enough for the forces and the plastic hex-bushing wears. Next the steering "slips", then it "strips", and steering control goes from bad to worse. At this point you need both the new shaft AND the new hex bushing. If you use the new shaft with the old bushing, it will "work" but soon fail again.Apparently some MTD tractors make this job very tough. My White-LT165 was not so awful. The bottom bolt was hex-head, not the impact-driven Phillips that other users curse at. (Maybe mine was replaced before?) While the MTD manual has you take-off the deck, hood, sides, gas-tank, etc, I was able to do the job just by loosening the side-panels to take off the plastic dashboard. While that bottom bolt is a pain, I put a Vice-Grips on it blind, then turned the steering wheel-- unscrewed easily.Clean the big gear in the bottom of the frame, then slather with oil or light grease. Friction here is not fatal but does no good. The new shaft's gear, new bushing, and both washers should be generously blessed with a tough grease (I used disc-brake grease). Set the hex washer and be sure it sits, set the greased flat washer, then slide the new shaft through. Grease bottom cone washer's shiny side, then install bottom bolt (install steering wheel temporarily so you can really honk that bolt tight).Someone said this part makes his tractor steer like a Cadillac. Well, no, it steers like a low-price tractor! But at least I don't have to slip-slip-slip the stripped gear and worry that I'll hit the fence or go off into the ditch. Very pleased with this shaft and hex-bushing.

A must have if your steering has gone out
The gear attached to this shaft will wear out in time. If this is your application, then this will take care of you. Add some grease as you install, and use loctite at both ends. I’ve also replaced all 4 tires, and my MTD is better than new. Check YouTube for a video to show you how to install. But this gives you the steps: remove the cap off the steering wheel; unbolt and remove the steering wheel; remove the 3 screws holding the rod in position at the top; remove the bolt holding the rod in place at the bottom; extract the rod; you might need to replace the bushing at the bottom; mine was fine, but I had ordered one just in case; then install your new rod; finish by doing everything else in reverse; make sure you have your steering wheel centered; I still have some slop in the steering linkage, but no problem on a riding mower; enjoy!

Required some rework.
I had to chase te threads on the gear end wit a tap to start the screw.

OEM BACK TO NORMAL
Installed without incident seems to be a good fit. The steering problem for now has been corrected. If you take a close look at the original part you can see why this part will eventually fail. Also the Engineering Genius that decided to use a large bit phillips head bolt that clearly presents a problem for a tight space. When reinstalling consider using a quality 3/8 box wrench bolt with locktite and not the phillips bolt. I guess this is one off things that you will have to tackle to get a feel for what I'am telling you. The gear on the shaft is fabricated of a soft material and the gear has a twist which meshes with a geared cog which moves the tie rod via the wheels. Also one would scratch there head and ask why do we have to replace the entire steering shaft and not just the gear that failed. Lubrication is needed in this area metal on metal. You can handle this repair with a little planning and keeping safety in mind. Will update in the future if the part fails or fails prematurely. For now thumbs up.

Get all new materials when changing shaft.
Good product. This is not everything you need to replace a shaft. You should watch a few YouTube videos to make sure you get the barring that fits into the frame and AT LEAST one washer. When I properly installed the shaft with all new washer and baring, the shaft was slightly too long which allowed it to move around too much and caused the baring to slip out of the hole in the frame. But when I added another (2 total) washers, it filled the gap and held the baring in place. Now the mower turns perfectly without any slippage. Remember to only turn your steering wheel when in motion, should never turn while sitting still.

UPS out of Edenton, NC is atrocious!!
The part is and work just fine, however the UPS out of Edenton, NC has to be the poorest managed UPS hub in the fleet. The item I ordered was out for delivery since last week, shipped back to the Raleigh, NC hub, and them back to Edenton, NC hub all because GPS is imperfect. Not the first time with UPS in this part of the state. Too bad a customer can not request a different delivery company.

Steering column
Had to take half the mower apart to get it in but once it went in it worked fine.

So far so good.
Exact copy of factory part, but factory part is badly designed to begin with, but does the job, will have to see how long it will last.
