5-HTP is often recommended to people with depression, sleep and mood disorders, and hormone issues. However, unless you have a SPECIFIC deficiency in serotonin or a problem producing serotonin, you may have all of the above symptoms but 5-HTP will not improve these because your issue doesn't stem from a serotonin deficiency. You may instead be dealing with dopamine production or your symptoms are coming from other hormone or lifestyle imbalances. If so, this will be a waste of money for you. If your issue is truly a serotonin deficiency, you will notice a difference from taking one capsule of this in the evening, on an empty stomach or near empty (not with a meal as the bottle says), and within a short time, you will see an improvement. My suggestion: do your research and get a comprehensive medical test, i.e. know your body, before looking at buying this.That said, this is just 5-HTP at the standard recommended dose of 200 mg, in a base of rice flour. They could have used less rice flour and achieved a smaller capsule but oh well. You rarely need more than a single dose daily so 60 capsules in this bottle will last you two months.Remember, the bottle says take with a meal and most people are lazy and want to take all their supplements at the same time, when they remember to, often with a meal. However, for a hormone precursor like 5-HTP, timing is very essential to getting results because many factors affect absorption and breakdown of the supplement by your body. Don't just pop one of these whenever you remember, with whatever other stuff you're taking. Fats, fiber, protein, etc, all can impede absorption and then you're just washing this down the drain, so to speak. Unless you suffer from intense anxiety during the day, this is best taken in the evening NOT mixed with a meal, at least an hour away from food.Capsule is vegetarian, not bovine.

The product pictures all show a bottle with 120 capsules, so I'm deducting a star from my review because that is misleading since many potential customers will see the picture and assume that is how many they will get. But the bottle Nui Nutra is selling on this page only contains 60 capsules.Other than that mistake, the quality of the 5-HTP seems good. I was previously taking a 100mg 5-HTP capsule each day (a different brand), but these capsules are 200mg each. So far I have not noticed a difference, despite the larger dosage. But I know it's working, because in the past when I stopped taking 5-HTP completely for a few weeks, I could tell a big difference in how I felt.

After a lifetime of being a good sleeper, the stress of the past year has taken a real toll.  After too many nights lying awake until dawn, I decided I needed help.  In the past, when I needed a little extra sleep insurance, I'd take an over-the-counter sleep aid.  They're legal, and supposedly not habit forming, but that's just not something I want to put into my body on a daily basis.As I started to research my options for something more natural, I discovered just how many substances and products there were!  Being something of a science geek, I chose a cross-section of the options, ordered ten different products and started an epic spreadsheet.  I'm about halfway through my experiment, and the results have been fascinating!  I only wish that I could guarantee your results will match mine, however we all have different bodies, different chemistry, different sensitivities, and different responses.  The best I can offer is an honest account of my own results.  Now, before embarking on this little adventure, I'd never even heard of 5-HTP. A few minute on Google had me convinced that the science was compelling. I had to try it! I figured that it made sense to try it pure and unadulterated by additional ingredients, which is how I wound up with the Nui Nutra-Pure Extra Strength capsules. Alas, I did not do well with them. The first night I took the prescribed dose, I began to feel very nauseated shortly after. I felt really ill. It did NOT help me sleep. However, any good scientist knows that correlation does not equal causation. I tried again the following night. I didn't feel as bad, but I didn't feel good. One more attempt on the third night, and another strong bout of nausea has me convinced in this particular case, correlation DOES equal causation. But that's just me. Apparently 200mg of 5-HTP is not good for me. I think it's very likely your results would be... less negative? Possibly positive?I have some other products to try that are more of a blend of different ingredients, with about a quarter as much 5-HTP, and hopefully I'll have better luck with a lower dose. And, if not, I'll know that this substance is just not for me. Fortunately, I tolerate melatonin just fineNow, luckily, I got this product free in return for a review, but price is a factor for me, and supplements can get costly.  The products I'm sampling range in price from 25 cents to two dollars a day.  The Nui Nutra-Pure Extra Strength 5-HTP capsules cost only 25 cents a day at the time of my acquisition, making them the most affordable option. So, if your body tolerates 5-HTP better than mine, this might be a great choice for you.One final note: Others here know more about medicine and physiology than I do.  These supplements are largely unregulated.  If you have any medical issues at all, it would seem prudent to discuss this with your physician.  I hope this was helpful to you.  Wishing you good sleep!
