What is the difference between the 300 and 500.
How do you use this with Ethernet cable for one device and as a wifi extender as well in a wifi dead spot area?
can additional extenders be added? So one base unit wired to the router, and have several extenders throughout the house?
Can you connect other version's of a tp link powerline adapter to these?

Amazed at how good this is. Superb product

I am a network engineer and I bought this for a job I had to do for a client which involved getting a wifi signal to a set of remote gate posts on a property for a smart intercom / doorbell. This product for me was both vastly cheaper than buying the amount of cat5 (ethernet) cable I needed and a million times easier than running it down the side of a very long driveway.I am incredibly impressed with this product and I use TP Link powerline networking gear a lot but the first time I used this model with the wifi option which not only worked really well the wifi signal this plug produced was very strong and rock solid and could be picked up from a considerable distance away.Setup literally could not be easier you simply plug the smaller of the two plugs into a electrical socket and plug one end of the supplied cat5 (ethernet) cable into the plug and the other end into the back of your broadband router (or network switch / patch panel etc). Then plug the bigger of the two plugs into a electrical socket in the area you want the extended wifi signal in. The bigger of the two plugs also have a ethernet / network port on it so you can plug a cable into it and then into the back of a computer, tv, games console etc and still benefit from the wifi extension too.Take it from someone who knows their stuff when it comes to this carry on.... this is a excellent piece of kit made by a manufacturer who is unable to make a bad product... TP Link are superb. The price paid is a bargain full stop but as I said above given the cost of the cable I would have to have used this for me was the bargain of the century and saved me a back breaking day of pulling cable.Cannot recommend highly enough... it's a no brainer ladies and gentlemen!

Read the manual! Check Wi-Fi requirements

I have had this AV600 kit for years now. Over years I have accumulated several extender products - different wireless extenders, and a few Powerline ones. As other equipment has changed over time, out configurations and needs have changed.Recently I wanted to get Wi-Fi working in a part of the house which wasn't getting a good signal, even with the other wireless extenders in place.I realised that I had this kit from years ago, used to feed a signal to a TV. In recent years the direct wireless link to the TV from the router seemed to work well enough, so it had effectively been disconnected.I moved this to the remote location where I wanted the WiFi - but in the first instance that didn't do much."Finally" I read the manual- having not seen it for years. I was aware of the pairing button and the reset button - which are typical in these devices. I didn't notice that the Wi-Fi "Light" is also a button. Knowing about that makes a huge difference. If this button is pressed, then the Wi-Fi starts to configure and leaps into action. This brought up a new Wi-Fi point to connect to. Rather than have this with the same name as our Router based network, for the time being I have left this with the TP-Link_09EE id, and used the default password set at the factory for the particular unit.Coverage over the whole house has now improved, though note that mobile devices may switch seamlessly between access points, so it doesn't follow that the new wireless AP is broadcasting over a wide area.Hopefully this will now service our needs - typically using mobile devices, such as portable computers, mobile phones, tablets etc.For what we want/need it seems fast enough now - and sends and transmits video sufficient for our requirements.I have also considered the faster wireless extender kit, but this now doesn't seem necessary.A few points to consider.1. Using the default hardware Wi-Fi password for the unit may not be ideal. It may be better to use a longer password for security reasons. I believe this is possible.2. Some users may want the Access Point to be identied with the Broadband Router name and have the same password. This should be easy to set up using the cloning process described in the manual.3. Another user here has pointed out that the Wi-Fi with this unit is only single band. We might prefer to have dual band operation, in which case I'll have to buy another compatible Powerline unit, with the dual band wi-fi capability. I don't know whether the faster AV TP-Link units do have dual band Wi-Fi., or "merely" only provide a faster wired connection over the mains circuits. For the time being this kit seems to be doing most of what we wanted it for recently, but we may update later if we feel we have to.Finally - this at last seems to be providing the kind of performance we were hoping for - and at first sight seems very much better than the wireless range extenders bought previously.A recent trend seems to be towards wireless mesh networks, and TP-Link do offer some mesh products. The experience with this Powerline kit suggests to me that this provides far better performance than most wireless systems, but YMMV.We have a couple of consumer units - with a lot of circuits, and this does't seem to present any issues, but in other places Powerline kit may have problems with connectivity between locations which are on different mains circuits. Typically houses with upstairs and downstairs wiring may have that as an issue - but it doesn't apply here.

it works but those speed numbers are misleading

Beware, that 600 speed is only the wifi max, If you want to plug in for a more stable connection (like for competitive gaming for example) then the Ethernet ports are 100 max.I managed to get signal upstairs in my house where the wifi couldn't reach which is great, the transfer rate is roughly 330 according to the app, but the Ethernet output was 87mbps max.

Excellent piece of kit allowing me to get great broardband coverage into the back of the house where there's a black spot. All I needed to do was plug the TP-Link unit into the mains and plug the ethernet cable into the back you my broardband hub and then plug the receiving TP-Link unit into a mains socket in the room with poor signal strength and press the button on each to connect them both.It was very easy to set up and reliable.

It doesn't fly through the air like traditional wifi re-transmitters, it goes on the electricity

It looked like wizardry to me at first as I was used to the traditional WIFI re-transmitters which basically get the WIFI and re-route it in the air. Yet, this one is a different mechanism, as it uses your house electric wires to create a wifi port (i've never heard of that before, I had to google it). Ultimately you plug the smaller one to the router with the cable, then you go to wherever you need the WIFI and plug the large one, then wait like 2 mintes and voia...there is internet. Even if there is a 5 meter thick concrete wall between your router and where you need wifi...this will get the job done as long as the electricity cables are connected (as it doesnt fly through the air). 5 stars.
