A very readable book
I had thought about reading War & Peace for some time but had been put off by my perception (correct) that the print size in the paperback is too small for comfortable reading and another perception (incorrect) that the book is excessively long. The Oxford World's Classic Hardback edition is excellent. It is a thick and heavy book but the print size and quality is excellent. The main text at just over 1200 pages is long, but no more so than some modern classics, and the translation is excellent. At this time where we are dominated by Brexit the book gives a valuable view of an important period in our history seen from a very different European perspective. I am much enjoying it.

Don't be put off.
The very title, War and Peace, has become a by-word for something long and difficult to read. Don't be put off by that. It's interesting and well written. It does take time but it will send you to another time and place in which you can immerse yourself for weeks. I'd also recommend Les Misérables and Walden. They will give you something that television and films, no matter how good they are, just cannot.

Like wading through treacle...
I can fully understand why a lot of people struggle with this book. I have done it by audio on Audible and it was a good story. BUT - This alleged "best" translation (Maude) is only a partial translation and it is overrated. Part one is not exactly riveting stuff (with some really irritating female characters), but a great deal of the text is in French. You have to refer to the footnote for the translation (I don't speak French). In addition, some words are marked with asterisks, which refer to historical explanations at the back of the book. The upshot being that reading this is disjointed, hard work and is certainly NOT a pleasure. I'd suggest for future editions that the French dialogue is printed in ENGLISH and the historical explanations become the footnotes on each page.

Not well quality checked
Disappointed that several pages fell out when I opened it. I can live with it - simply because I can't be bothered with the hastle of sending it back!Hopefully no more will fall out. Also surprised it has no dust jacket.
