Uva ursi is used primarily for urinary tract disorders, including infections of the kidney, bladder, and urethra; swelling (inflammation) of the urinary tract; increased urination; painful urination; and urine that contains excess uric acid or other acids. Uva ursi is also used in combination to treat people with compulsive bedwetting and painful urination. Today, uva ursi is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) and cystitis (bladder inflammation) and helped prevent recurrent UTIs. Uva ursi contains arbutin, a chemical known to have antimicrobial activity against E. coli. Uva Ursi may be of great value in diseases of the bladder and kidneys, strengthening and imparting tone to the urinary passages.
