The Oxford Book of English Madrigals

Arrived in perfect condition, no markings on the music, and cheaper than new. Needed this for madrigal group I joined. Smiled to see a thrift store price sticker - hey, win for the seller and win for me.

The critical notes and selection, as well as the editing, make this (with its companion volumes  The Oxford Book of Italian Madrigals  and  The Oxford Book of French Chansons ) the book of choice for madrigal singers. The only problems I find with the book are the tiny print, the pseudo-alphabetical arrangement, and the binding which is quite tight.The scholarship is flawless and it definitely belongs on the shelf of any madrigal group's artistic director. You really can't hope to have a madrigal group without these books.

What a great source for any madrigal group! This book contains a cappella madrigals of 3, 4, 5 and 6 parts (mostly SATB or SSATB) by the major composers of English madrigals, such as Byrd, Farmer, Gibbons, Morley, Ward, Weelkes & Wilbye. If you sing or study this type of music, you must have this book.Also check out "English and Italian Renaissance Madrigals" (CD) by the Hilliard Ensemble -- the Oxford book and the English Madrigals CD of this wonderful 2-CD set have 16 songs in common.

Great selection of tunes with history as well :)

I was so happy to receive this book as I have misplaced mine and was missing it terribly. The book was used but very gently and there are no marking in it which, as a singer, I appreciate. I like to make my own!

Well researched book of old English madrigals that are well worth study. The book is published in rather small type and music notation, but is useful for small group singing.

I purchased this to replace a lost copy. It is truly a treasure.One of the best collections of English Madrigals I've ever seen.

When I joined the Madrigal Choir in the Fishers Renaissance Faire, the director mentioned that he got most of his works from this book, so I purchased it. I love singing in the choir, and this provides us with some wonderful music to share.

I bought this on recommendation by our choir director.......we haven't had the chance to use it yet because the coronavirus situation has stopped us rehearsing....we'll try again using Zoom!

How did this meet my expectations Amazon asks - its a book; its got madrigals in it; they're English, so yes, it met them. This sort of thing isn't really an impulse buy - if you need it, then its perfect; if you don't then you're not likely to find it veyr interesting.

Indispensible. If you're a choral singer there is really no other anthology which provides so comprehensive and scholarly a guide to this aspect of the repertoire. I've tried Penguin Book of Madrigals, or individual copies from the Fellowes era, but this is the best!

If English madrigals are what you are after, buy this. Lots of songs, clear and straightforward arrangements typically for 4-6 voices, ideal for small group singing.

Great collection BUT cheaper (I found out later) at my excellent Independent bookshop in Wivenhoe!
