It's nothing particularly fancy. If you know where to get EL wire and a sound activated box you can make it on your own. It's a plain and cheap "no tie" tie with adjustable elastic and the wire is sewn to the edge of the tie with fishing wire (that looks a little odd in broad daylight, but at night in a party no one noticed it until I turn it on), you're really paying for the convenience of having it ready made. I swapped out the battery pack for one with 2 batteries (the tie comes with a single battery pack) which was a bit of a hassle because the included box has Velcro that keeps it hidden behind the tie, but the bigger one I put on sometimes wanted to peek out because nothing was holding it in place. I changed it because I didn't want to risk running out of juice in the dance floor (in hindsight I should've just brought an extra battery with me and use the included box). I also got a pair of glasses to match. They were both a big hit and responded to the music as expected. Like most sound activated boxes it comes with a dial so you can control how sensitive it will be (in a dance floor this is necessary or you'll tie will blink constantly, defeating the purpose of the sound activated effect, until you find the sweet spot. My one complaint is that because the tie is folded in half in the box, the wires tended to try to return to that shape and kept trying to fold the tie in half. I used the (included) tie clip to force it to stay in place and though it looked a bit crooked at times it worked alright.
