This Charming Man: A Novel

Extremely relatable, light and serious, deep and shallow all at once
I had been recommended this author by a friend, finally decided to give it a try. I like that it felt a lot like reading about my life, in the sense that there are moments or lightheartedness despite the tragedies, there is pain beautifully written. The way the characters have shown to react to problems is so human, so normal, so relatable. Look forward to reading more by Marian Keyes

Very interesting
She creates characters you can truly relate to. They begin to feel like your friends as the story progresses. I really enjoyed reading this book. It totally engrossed me.

Funny in parts but an overall downer
This book gave me a pain in my head by the time I got close to the end. It is very long and has an awful lot going on in it. I think perhaps Marian Keyes feels like she has to have ISSUES in her books, particularly WOMEN'S ISSUES, so that they will be taken seriously and this is the worst book of hers for that. Instead of the multiple narrators, I think she couldve just stuck with Lola (done without the Bridget Jones Diary style shorthand), skipped the whole domestic violence/ sadism/ alcoholism/ political themes entirely and just wrote a simple, funny book about the romance between Lola and Rossa / Chloe with a bit more detail and character development. It's not that I don't think those are important issues but they're not handled right here. It was like three or four different books collided and they did not go together at all. I was laughing out loud and ten pages later utterly, utterly depressed. The whole thing was up and down like that. I stuck with it but all in all I feel like the good bits of this book were not worth putting myself through the rest of it for. Also a lot of the characters that were meant to be likeable were really annoying.

Strong narrative
I had heard Marion Keyes on the radio and was impressed by how witty and entertaining she was. I bought this book expecting a light hearted witty piece of writing but it was more a polemic about domestic abuse. The characters did not seem convincing to me. Overall I was disappointed.

This Charming Man......
I found the start of the book 📖 hard to get into, and this is usually for me as I love all of Marian books 📚 .I am sooo glad that I stuck with it as it turned out to be another winning book that I didn't want to put down.So I would definitely recommend that you read it, as it has a really good story to tell.

A disappointing read
I have only got part way through this book and gave up. I am new to this author and read 'The Break' and found it really enjoyable, but sadly not this book and would not recommendThe book is written in stunted text speak, and as such the story does not flow. Lola's story line was a painful read and unbelievable.I would not recommend .

Couldn't put it down
Absolutely loved this book! In true Marian Keyes style, she takes you on an emotional roller coaster, I was laughing, I was sad, I was gripped, I didn't know how to feel in some parts. Lola was my favourite character, I thought she was hilarious and so relatable. Overall, it's a must read - and Marian does an amazing job of writing about addiction and abuse
