Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction, Vol. 4

Disappointing 4th installment
Through the first 3 volumes of Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction, I fell in love with the characters and the storytelling. The characters (even minor ones) were are fully fleshed out people, and their interactions always felt real (if not sometimes odd, due only to the fact that some of the characters themselves can be odd).To me volume four really drops the ball on the storytelling and characters. Several brand new characters are introduced and just stick to the main cast for no explicable reason, seem to be instantly become soulmates in literally minutes, and push out some of the previous supporting characters. These characters never really show growth or character, and 1 is a bit offensive, honestly. The story just jumps around (which is maybe why these characters feel so shallow), and not like how it did in the first three volumes, in this one it seems like important character development and plot points are just skipped and we have to assume something happened to change the main characters. This value of this book really depends on what type of storytelling you like, but it is not the same type of characters and interactions as the previous volumes, so just keep that in mind.

Forging Ahead, Slowly but Surely
While not nearly as dramatic, explosive and foreboding of a volume as the previous, Volume 4 is still chock full of developments. With an incredibly intriguing and thrilling opening chapter, it's clear a new story arc has been started and behavior of the characters as well as their language seems to sink this home. Cleverly expanding the cast, foreshadowing or laying red herrings and giving some much MUCH needed background and depth to particular characters, Volume 4 continues to prove Asano has something truly special here and sets many pieces into play that this reader is eagerly waiting for the next release to see where they go.
