Q: Can the ball be removed from the housin?

Yes. When you look at the picture of the roller ball there is a seam...that section unscrews from the base and the ball can be removed for cleaning, etc.

Q: How is the quality of it?

It’s good quality. I push down on it fairly hard with my feet & it withstands the pressure. It’s been great for my arch/heel pain.

Q: Is this good for self post op Lymphatic massage?

I am not a doctor but if you need a a cold, free moving, hard ball massage it should be good. The pressure is controlled by the person giving the massage. There are times when I just want the cold and, since I keep mine in the freezer when not in use, I can just hold it (I used it on a light steam burn).

Q: How does this compare to the gold standard, direct ice massage with a block frozen in a cup?

I do not have any knowledge of the one you want to compare. This muscle massager I keep in the freezer so it is always handy. I roll the ball with my hand to get it moving before using it on the sore muscle . The ball rolls easily, it is not loose nor tight. I have had this item for awhile now and am very pleased with it.
