Well played collection of less familiar Glinka
For those of us who know only Glinka's "Ruslan..." overture, and the overture and polonaise from "Life for the Tsar", this disc provides about forty additional minutes of charming and well-played instrumental music. This predigital recording from 1976 is somewhat harsh-sounding, particularly in this transfer, but the price is right, and there's a built-in MP3 copy in addition to the regular cd tracks. Never heard of the Rostov Symphony Orchestra or Pavel Levashov, but they present an ideally idiomatic reading of this material. By the way, if you think Solti or Reiner's readings of the "Ruslan" overture are speedy, wait 'til you hear Levashov's! N.B. A couple of years later, I must reiterate that, while the performances are exemplary, this is not an ideal disc in terms of recorded sound. And, yet, I do find myself returning to it surprisingly often.
