Great book to teach kids with

It's brilliant! Highly recommended.
In looking for an interesting gift for my grandchildren, I came across this book by accident - thinking it was a children's book - but soon found that it was the gateway to my learning US geography, the details of which had eluded me for 60 years. It's extremely well-written and organized and makes a mundane subject very entertaining. Together, these features provided the tools to help me actually remember the states and their locations without the tediousness of rote memorization. I'm sure the rhyming feature works well to keep children engaged in the book and it was exactly what it took for me to finally learn - and retain - the location of the US states, a huge bonus for the cross-country trip I plan to take now that I am retired. I admit that my grankids learned the states more quickly that I did and they take great pleasure in quizzing me. Thank you to the author for making the learning of a difficult task accessible and fun for all ages. Highly recommended!Btw, I also found that having a copy of the ebook version on my Kindle is a great instant reference to take with me.

Wow! It works tremendously well!
We schooled for a half day on Martin Luther King Day since all the area public schools officially had the day off. I had this book laying around (for a couple years, actually) so decided to pull it out for something different to do with the kids (ages 10 and 7). We took our time with it, spending a total of 20 minutes in reading. When we were done, I was amazed to see my 10yo son remembered all but two states! The 7yo remembered significantly less, but he definitely remembered all the stories behind the states.I'll use this book each day this week, giving them a total of five passes through to help embed the state stories and names in their heads. Then I'll put it away for awhile, bringing it out every other month or so just for review. This is actually the first time *I* can name all 50 states without pause or question, so I've learned them along with my boys! Next we'll start on the state capitals. I have the book, Yo! Sacramento!" so we'll try that out. This book comes with the highest of recommendations!

Good but not a "must have" for young children.
I'd been looking for homeschool materials on the U.S. map and found this book. My kids are very young, just 4 & 5 but I thought a rhyming book would be fun for them to start hearing about the states.I think it's a bit much for younger grade school kids. I could see an older upper grade school age child getting much more out of this. The rhymes aren't all that easy to memorize or go along with, and some of the connections in drawings and "clues" are a leap for younger children to make. I didn't think all the clues and hints were entirely very clever either. I'll keep reading it to them and going over the pictures as their years go on. I think it'll be handy when they're snapping to more of the concepts this book uses, but truth be told I got farther with them memorizing states just with rote learning, pointing and naming and memorizing just like many of us did in school. I related states to where family members were born, shapes of the states that were easy to see, something that might be of personal interest to them about that state, etc. The rhymes and clues were just more to remember and they got a little distracted with the main objective. All in all, not a must have book for teaching young children IMO.

I wish the author would publish a whole series of books like this!
I’m in my 40’s and absolutely love this book. I was never required to identify the 50 states back when I was in school. I feel much more educated now and found the rhymes and cutsie clues helpful as memory tools. I so wish the author would publish an entire series of books on US and world geography (countries, rivers and other bodies of water, mountain ranges, country capitals, etc).

Great quality used item, fun teaching tool.
The quality of the used item from this seller is excellent. Practically looks new. The book is enjoyable and I think it will help my seven year old with state identification. Actually, I think it will help adults with a few easy to mix up states. It definitely changes the way you look at each state. Do not going into this purchase thinking you will learn information about the states other then how to identify them.

I found him first...
I don't like the book but my kids do. Considering they are the ones who benefit I'd say the book is right on the money. It has visual appeal that compliments the hands on activity of putting together a U.S. map jigsaw puzzle. For our purposes we used the Melissa & Doug USA Map 51 pcs Floor Puzzle . I personally got lost with the story about the man and the table etc. but my kids were riveted to the images. We have yet to to walk past any map, whether it be a world map or U.S. map without one of my kids wanting to identify the little man first. Nothing like healthy competition and they are learning at the same time. 5 stars on their behalf.

great resource, recommended for everyone
My son is only 4 years old but we have started getting him familiar with state names using fun games and this book. It's a bit much for his age, but we just work on one state at a time and this book puts a fun spin on memorizing them. This book is great for visual learners, as each state is a picture and part of the story about the man in the map.I highly recommend this book to anyone wanted to memorize the state's and their places.....even adults.
