Sock Loom Basics: Using the Kb Sock Loom

Not a bad book.
I purchased the sock loom a while back but the only real directions were on the DVD that came with it. I do much better with written directions so I put the loom aside until I happened upon this book. When it came in I was excited because I already had all I needed to begin. I sat down with the book and decided to try a simple pattern. While I am experienced with crocheting, have learned the very beginnings of knitting, and have done a bit of loom knitting, I figured I would be able to pick this up easily. I was wrong. While the directions are fairly straightforward, I didn't feel like they were written in the clearest manner. Sometimes the description left me going back to re-read as I wasn't quite sure which loop they were talking about. I am not saying that the directions are wrong or that you will not be able to knit socks. I am simply saying I have worked with a lot of different patterns over the years, from books, the internet, friends, and the inside of yarn wrappers. This is just not written as clearly as it could be, in my opinion. Considering this is a 'basics' book, the directions could be much clearer. I ended up hitting on a web site that had very clear directions and it got me started so much easier. Then I was able to pick up the book and move along. The patterns themselves are a nice variety of basic patterns that had me itching to crank out socks. My kids all flipped through and had socks they wanted me to make and were picking out colors. This part of the review is only an observation and I didn't take the fact that I didn't think this through into my rating. Socks take a long time to make. All of the other things I have done on the loom (hats, scarves, purses), have moved along nicely. Needlework, to me, tends to have a nice flow. It is one of the reasons I enjoy it. On the sock loom, I found myself getting quickly frustrated. While it does get easier as you go, I don't feel like I would ever be fast enough to want to make many socks. The pegs are small and metal, as it the tool. Many of the stitches require you to lay the yarn either above or below a loop, slide the tool under the loop, grab the yarn, pull up a new loop, slide the original loop off of the peg and put the new loop on the peg. You will do this thousands of times with very little progress. As I looked down after an hour's work and had much, much less than an inch of sock, I laughed and said to myself, "Duh!" The yarn is thin, the loops are tiny, and this will take a long time. Why didn't I see this before? This is by no means intended to deter anybody. My husband's grandmother used to crochet doilies and the like with fine thread. She did beautiful work. I couldn't do that. I need to progress faster. It's just how I am. If you are looking for loom knitting like you would knit a scarf, wrapping the yarn and flipping the loops, a nice, heavy wool on your loom...this isn't it. If you have patience and don't mind some slow going, then this book offers nice patterns to get a good start to knitting socks.

Bad English Translation
I was an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER at knitting. I had NEVER knitted anything in my life. I purchased the digital book to help me learn how to use a KB Sock Loom. I figured out the cast ons using the book. The other stitches in this book are hard to get. WHY? 1> the book reads like a bad English translation. It's hard to follow - some of the instructions just don't compute. 2> There aren't enough photos to help a beginner learn how to do the sitiches. I might have figured out the Knit Stitch if there were more than 2 pics to supplement the bad translation. FORTUNATELY the digital book wasn't expensive. I did help me to familiarize myself with the Loom and get started - IN THE FIRST 5 PAGES (I haven't bothered to go beyond the Knit Stitch in the book out of frustration). I've ended up refering to Pinterest Videos from goodknitkisses to learn more...

Would have liked better info for sizes
I bought a sock loom at a craft store but it had been a returned item and didn't include any patterns. the loom I bought is adjustable so this book looked like the perfect accessory. The instructions are fairly good for someone who has already learned the basic techniques. My one complaint is that it doesn't give you an easy way to determine how many pegs to use. Instead, it provides a somewhat complicated formula that involves measuring the circumference of your foot. I did some google research and found where someone said how many pegs she uses for her own socks and went with that. It would have been nice if they could have provided a chart that says Women's size X shoe use Y pegs, Men's size W shoe use Z pegs, and so on. After all, when I go to the store to buy socks, the package says they fit range ABC and don't ask you to measure the circumference of your foot.Getting past the sizing issue, the patterns look like they will make some fun socks and I can't wait to try them. I'm working on the basic sock for now and am pleased that the instructions for the heel are straight forward.

Better Than Most
Since I haven't read every single pattern in this book, I can't actually judge in entirety. Still, I did find it easy to follow in a couple of patterns I did use. The illustrations are far better than most of the loom knitting books. I do plan to keep it as a reference. There are still a couple of the socks I want to try.

Good book but no DVD
This book is a nice intro to how to knit socks with the pictured loom. Great instructions, some nice beginner sock patterns. The first sock I used a Deborah Norville Serenity Sock Weight yarn (cotton-no stretch) and the sizing was way too big. I think the sizing would work for a more stretchy yarn. I just took it apart and made it smaller. One think I am confused about.....no DVD. The description specificly states "this book, which comes with a detailed DVD to get you started" but it does not. I was disappointed that it stated it comes with a dvd but didn't have one. While the book is good (no complaints about that) the decription needs to be changed if it does not include the material that it states it does.

It is a good partner to the loom
I was one of the many people who looked inside the book and skimmed over the contents and came away with the idea that I was going to get the loom, DVD and book. IT IS ONLY A BOOK! This book is perfect for learning to do more of the very fine work on an extremely well designed and manufactured loom that I had to buy separately. I am still in warm weather here in southern California and have too much to do outside. I plan on having rainy days for the hours of sitting still this requires. I am looking forward to it. The video that came with the loom and the videos on YouTube are wonderful. This book gives you ideas for more complex projects

Not for beginners!
I am beginner in loom knitting and as it says basics ans reviews are good I thought it is good.I am disappointed as I tried for hours now and instructions are too hard to understand and just start making sock. Tried to look up help on YouTube but could do so without wasting my money on this book. I suppose if you know what you doing in sock loom it will be handy but I do not recommend for beginners as the only thing it did is put me off loom knitting that I wanted to learn badly and found interesting.

Nice book, simple instructions to surprise you with how much a sock loom does
Nice easy to read book with some different ideas and ways to make socks or leg warmers with your loom. You would be surprised what you could do with what to me just looked like a really big French knitting dolly! You need a good bit of patience and a steady hand for loom knitting and a basic ability to crochet or French knit will help you no end and its about being good with the hook really.Nice book.

Nice Book
Recieved this book within 48 hours, well packaged too. There are a variety of designs for socks in the book, for both ladies and men. The type face is large and very easy to read, there are lots of detailed instructions and photos, so I won't go wrong. Although the yarn stated is American, this equates to English 4 ply yarn which is widely available in the UK.
