Lions Gate, Rose Red

I'm a Stephen King fan but this movie is about my favorite. Ghosts, suspense and good plots make this a really great movie!

*SPOILER* The story centers around a enormous haunted mansion in Seattle named Rose Red which is said to kill men and make women vanish forever, ultimately giving itself a "Roach Motel" reputation. Many check in, but few check out! A lot of people criticized this film due to the lack of explanation as to what exactly was behind the dark entities within the walls of Rose Red. It was the spirits of the ancient Indian burial ground that the house was built on. It was much like the same concept of the Poltergeist movie, the house became possessed by the dead souls who were buried under the establishment. Which was bad luck because it disturbed their resting place which deeply angered them. And just like the little girl who got sucked into the TV in the Poltergeist film, the people who vanished in Rose Red where consumed and taken to the other side and trapped there, eventually becoming part of the evilness.The history of the people who lived in the house, and its most fondest owner was a woman named Ellen Rimbauer who's life was literally controlled by this mansion.Our "antagonist", Ellen Rimbauer, is a very tragic villain. She was transformed from a submissive women who just wanted to be loved and blessed with a beautiful family and home, into a possessed Zombie stuck in a state of "limbo", while controlled by the evil spirits inhabiting her environment, confined in the alternative universe of the house forever. Ellen's story is indeed a romantic, sad and frightening supernatural tale about love, hate and the unfairness many women of her time experienced as victims of sexual repression and Victorian morality. Ellen was a soul who had been very hurt in life and her story is also about how we can take the negative feelings we felt during our time on earth beyond the grave, and then some.To lose everyone you loved due to a "houses" jealousy, must have been horrendous. Ellen lived a life of heartbreak, disappointment and anger. Her husband, a very powerful business man who owned a vast and successful oil company, cheated on her constantly. Her young daughter, six year old April, who she loved more than anything, vanished in the house, never to be seen again. Other people close to Ellen vanished also, a few maids, one of them being a African Voodoo woman named Sukeena who was a very loyal friend to Ellen. And even a beautiful and spunky movie star disappeared in the house during a party in the 1940's, sealing Rose Red's reputation. Ellen spent her miserable life adding more rooms and elements to the house, creating a never-ending construction on the estate, hoping that if she never stopped building to make the house happy, the house would show mercy and release her daughter back to her. Rose Red grew envious of April and Ellen's relationship because the house wanted Ellen all to itself and anyone who was a threat to Rose Red was killed or eaten. When Ellen was eventually consumed by the house in 1950, it was ultimately abandoned yet was rumored that the house's architecture continued to grow all on its very own, but only on the inside so no one would notice.Due to its long history of mysterious deaths and disappearances from the past, our story picks up when the house is finally investigated by parapsychologist Dr. Joyce Reardon and a team of truly gifted psychics. It is up to Joyce and her teammates to find out the deadly secrets of Rose Red and reveal the dark forces inhabiting it, or die trying.The special effects were well done for a TV movie, the acting was pretty good and kept me glued to the screen. Very scary and very captivating.

This movie has stuck with me ever since I first saw it in Elementary School because of the sheer terror it has given me over the years. As time goes on, and the flaws in the SFX become more apparent with each passing year, this movie holds a special fondness for me. Released in 2002 on the ABC Network, Rose Red is the story of a paranormal psychology professor and her group of psychics exploring a run down estate in search of proof of the supernatural. Unsurprisingly the supernatural finds them and one by one they begin to go missing as the horror ensues.What I find so gripping about this miniseries is how similar it is to a King novel. On the surface this may be easy to discern when comparing Rose Red to Carrie and the Shining, although there's more to it than that. When Professor Reardon takes the group on a tour of the house and explains the history of the hauntings the style screams King all over. Theres a dash of Kings characteristic morbid sense of humor mixed in when Professor Reardon is explaining the mysterious and bizarre ways people had died in the house and then casually goes on to mention how a carpenter died simply from choking on an apple. It's subtle dark humor like that which really evokes the feel of Kings writing style for the viewer. Another example of this is when Steven Rimbauer, Reardon's love interest, uses an all too familiar word King enjoys using "obtuse" towards the end of the film. It also doesn't hurt that King delivers a "cheesey" cameo.I think what really does it for me with this movie is the rich history King creates for the haunted mansion. Similarly to the Overlook Hotel in the Shining, the evil at Rose Red is old and lurking. The reputation this house has of missing people and strange deaths raises the tension and sense of forboding when the group finally arrives at the gate. After learning of it's dark past the suspense over what will happen in the present becomes much more intense.Of course this review would be remiss if it didn't go into the SFX from 2002. Some will undoubtedly disagree with me, but I personally think the SFX for the ghosts are chilling. Perhaps the impression it seared into my 10 year old psyche is clouding my judgment though I think these SFX will motivate you to turn on the lights after they pop up on screen.If you dont mind your horror long and perhaps some slow pacing this movie is for you. When asked what films still scare me to this day Rose Red is always on that list and I think I've seen my fair share of horror movies to lend some credibility to this claim. Check it out and enjoy!

Item arrived in a timely manner and good packaging and we were satisfied with the quality of the video and I would recommend this video to fans of Stephen King's if they want to see some of his lesser known works

Fidel à lui-même, Stephen King prend le temps d'installer son univers : les personnages, les décors, l'histoire, les confits, les mystères.Des personnages doués de capacités psychiques sont engagés pour enquêter sur Rose Red, un manoir gigantesque , afin que leur employeur puisse prouver l'existence du paranormal, et, par conséquent, de la vie après la mort.Le point faible du film est, selon moi, les effets spéciaux, qui ont mal vieillis. Par contre, le scénario est l'un des points forts de ce film.Pour rappel, le film dure quatre heures. Donc pensez bien au pop-corn...

DVD in condizioni perfette, la custodia non presenta segni di usura. La spedizione veloce è l'imballaggio ottimo. Sono molto contenta del mio acquisto.

I bought the movie because I loved the miniseries, which ran more than a decade ago. I love this untarnished movie for the same reasons: an unparalled cast (a rousing bravo/a to the casting director, because it was the memory of the actors who sparked my idea of tracking this down on the net); a mystery surrounding the cause of the haunting of this house, bad from its literal foundation (thanks to Shirley Jackson personally from me, to add to Mr. King's acknowledgment in the movie's intro); and one really great, pell mell, reckless, run-for-your life, utterly Godforsaken and Godforsook disaster in which they blowed stuff up good for us! Tales of the Crypt monsters and truly imaginative, multi-coloured make-up and prostheses on the characters who didn't make it out are always fun, too; I'm not sure if I saw ghosts, zombies, or ghouls, but I probably saw them all! I have only one quibble. The miniseries was cut down, I suppose to put it on two DVDs. We viewers lost out on some things; a character just wasn't on screen any longer, with no explanation, and two others showed up, again without explanation; the mystery of the haunting lay within the triangular relationship of the husband, wife and maid (sister under the skin?), but much of that interaction was cut, and without it the underlying plotline seems a little sparse and the characterizations aren't as well developed. I now have a burning desire to find a copy of the book to read again, and if Lions Gate, who imo does horror very well, puts out a second set with the entire miniseries on it, I'll rush to buy it too. But this coming Hallowe'en, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is going to have to battle it out with Stephen King's Rose Red for my midnight viewing. Mwahahahaha!
