Part 1 Interesting, Part 2 A Rant
I found Part 1 of this book to be a very interesting social history of Britain during the 1930s, what with mass unemployment and the poor suffering as they do during such times. However, Part 2 was little more than an opinionated rant about socialists - what was the point? Today, it would be a post on the author's blog that could easily be ignored.Up until this point, I'd only read Orwell's 1984 and watched a BBC documentary about the author. After reading this book, I have the opinion that he was little more than a snob who thought he knew better how people lower down the British social pecking order should live their lives. That in itself belies his middle classness, doesn't it?Good job this was only a cheap book.

Good to read
Anthropological. A close up look at the life of the minors.Really beautifully written. I envy this kind of writing, I would love to be able to write like this.Strongly recommend this book as it is both Anthropological and historical and a really good education on how to craft an excellent piece of descriptive writing.

It’s an affordable classic
It’s Orwell and it’s affordable, everybody should read something from his collection of books, more relevant than Shakespeare in my view.

Timeless classic
I strongly recommend this book in order to better understand the motivations behind Orwell writing his classics like Animal Farm and 1984.
