Too Many Dogs (Step-Into-Reading, Step 1)

My 6 year old loves it
This book was a birthday gift for my 6 year old who is a budding reader. It’s short and sweet, with enjoyable rhyming, and clear, easy to read type. He loves the silly story and the descriptions of all the types of dogs. Soon enough, he’ll be reading it on his own. I say it’s a great book for pre-k to kindergarten aged children interested in dogs and learning to read.

Excellent first readers
I ordered 5 titles including The Amazing Planet Earth, Too Many Dogs, Too Many Cats, and Rocket and the Perfect Pumpkin. All 5 are carefully written to reinforce basic sight words, phonetic patterns and word families like color words. The quality of the paper and print is excellent and the pictures are colorful and provide clues to new words. There is a big jump in skill required between Step 1 and Step 2 so exposure to a variety of Step 1 books will likely lead to a more successful transition to more complex language, vocabulary, and length in Step 2.

One of the better easy readers
My eager young readers LOVE these "Too Many" books. We had purchase the cats version prior to this and when I realized they made a dogs edition, I purchased that one too. There isn't quite as much repetition as some of these books have, but the vocabulary is easy for beginners and the images do a fine job at clued in reading. My early 3 reader can relay this book after just a few rounds. It's fun, exciting, and engaging. I have no complaints in regards to this reader.

I love this Dog Book!
I may soon have to order another copy, because my students have almost loved this book to death! On one level it is very simple, teaching -er and -est and some rhyming adjectives. On another level there is the story of a man who is grilling. He goes inside for a moment and dogs come from everywhere to eat his food, sit in his lounge chair and swim in his above-ground pool. When he discovers that they have eaten all his food, he shouts, "Doggies please get OUT!". All the dogs leave, except for the smallest of the small who grabs the last scrap of food and runs away, exclaiming, "Woof!". The pictures are wonderful. I don't mind reading this book a hundred times a day!

My 18 moth old digs it.
Cute dogs. Weird dude. I want to ding a star because the man in the illustrations is so weird looking, but that’s just petty. My 18 month old is currently into books with rhythm and rhyme and this has both. It also has pictures of things she recognizes like plates, bowls, chairs, water, meat, etc. (oh yeah, and dogs). So that’s cool.
