A GREAT FLIP FLOP
FLIP FLOP COMPARISONS: OLUKAI OHANA THE BEST OVERAL WITH THE "CROCS MODI" - THE MOST BANG FOR THE $. In my efforts to find a GREAT Flip Flop (and attempt improvement on my Crocs MODI's I did a LOT of reading, Flip Flop reviews on the internet. The first decent Flip Flops I bought was a pair of Crocs MODI Flips, that were on sale at my local sporting goods store..... I LOVED THEM !! My only concern was that they might not be as sturdy (or long-lasting) as a Super Expensive, well made pair. So, of course, I had to do more research and try to find THE BEST Flip Flops made. Finally (after much review reading) I settled on three. I have now worn all three for about 3 weeks. I cannot attest to durability after only 3 weeks but I can give my impression of what their durability might be. The features I was looking for were: Contoured Foot Bed, Arch Support, Comfort, Cushiness & Sole flex, Quality of Workmanship, Staying on During Activities, Running true to Size and Impression of Durability. FYI - I normally wear a size 10.5 med. shoe. The three Flip Flops I tried were: Croc's MODI $ - Size 11 M OluKai Ohana $$$ - Size 11 M They were a bit loose so I exchanged them for a size 10 M. (However, that was a mistake when the Foot Bed proved to be too small). Vionic Harbor $$ - Size 11 M (with the Velcro adjustment strap.) Let me say that on a scale of 0 to 5; with 0 being unacceptable and 5 exceeding my expectations, all three of the Flips I bought scored very high. CONTOURED FOOTBED: Croc's MODI - 5, very nice contoured foot bed and heel. OluKai Ohana - 5, very nice contoured foot bed and heel. Vionic Harbor - 5, very nice contoured foot bed and heel. ARCH SUPORT: Croc's MODI - 5, very good arch support, positioned where it should be. not too high or too low. OluKai Ohana- 5, very good arch support, positioned where it should be. not too high or too low. Vionic Harbor- 5, very good arch support, positioned where it should be. not too high or too low. COMFORT: Croc's MODI - 5, very comfortable. The toe post is fairly comfortable. OluKai Ohana - 5, very comfortable. The toe post is a DREAM. Vionic Harbor - 3+, pretty comfortable, may take a little getting used to, or breaking in. The toe post was the most irritating of the three - Hoping that will get better with time.. The Velcro adjustment strap did not cause any discomfort. NOTE: After wearing them for 3 weeks, I simply couldn't take the irritation of the R. toe post. Had to send them back. Too bad, they appeared to be exactly what I wanted. CUSHINESS & SOLE FLEX: Croc's MODI - 4+, pretty cushy, when walking. Sole is flexible, but not mushy. OluKai Ohana - 5+, Simply THE BEST, a wonderful cushy walk. (Not too soft, not too hard.) Slightly flexible Sole - Just the right amount of flex. Vionic Harbor - 3++, a little stiffer than the other two but QUITE acceptable. Sole is the stiffest of the three but still somewhat flexible. QUALITY OF WORKMANSHIP: Croc's MODI - 5, a well made, well designed Flip Flop. OluKai Ohana - 5+, SUPERBLY designed and well made. Vionic Harbor - 5, Excellent design and workmanship. STAYING ON DURING ACTIVITIES: Croc's MODI - 5+, SIMPLY THE BEST! Stays securely on my feet during all activities. OluKai Ohana - 4, A bit loose, Staying securely in place? Takes some getting used to (I tried buying one size smaller - fit better but, then, the foot bed was too small). Vionic Harbor - 4, the Velcro adjustment strap helps it fit snugly. (no need for smaller size.) RUNS TRUE TO SIZE: Croc's MODI - 5, EXCELLENT !! Spot on! The size 11 M, fits my size 10.5 M foot perfectly. OluKai Ohana - 4, Fit PERFECTLY, except I found them to be a bit loose. (Tried correcting - by exchanging for a size smaller - Didn't work, foot bed was then too small). Vionic Harbor - 5, Excellent !! Again the Velcro adjustment makes up for any minor fit deviations. IMPRESSION OF DURABILITY: Croc's MODI - 4, the rather soft sole, looks as if it might wear out. But for the VERY REASONABLE PRICE - you could simply replace them OluKai Ohana - 5+, these Flips look like they would outlast me. After 3 weeks of wearing them constantly there is absolutely no signs of wear. Vionic Harbor - 5+, a very well-made Flip. Also looks like they will last many seasons.

Outstanding summer footwear
Expensive but last and don’t blow out quickly. Too expensive to wear to the beach. Insole and built-in arch are most comfortable that I’ve ever owned. Wait for sales.

Comfort with support!
Great shoe. This is my husband's 3rd pair he wears them everyday. Style is on point and arch support is firm but comfortable.

So far, so good. UPDATED: Still great; not perfect.
* SECOND UPDATE: I've had these shoes for just about one year at this point, and I've worn them nearly every day. Here are my observations: - The footbed has compressed further. They are still relatively comfortable, but walking on uneven or gravelly surfaces is more noticeable now. However, one benefit of this is that the foot moves less in the shoe during wet weather (as mentioned in the original review). - The sole is finally showing some wear under the ball of my foot, but the tread still has definition throughout. I'm somewhat impressed with the longevity of the sole in comparison to most other sandals I've owned. - The thong and upper are still in good shape and show no signs of deterioration or separation from the shoe. One shoe's strap *might* have stretched a bit, but if so, it's so minimal that it's really difficult to tell for sure. - I, along with other reviewers here, have noticed an issue of the front end having the problem of catching on the ground and "folding" under the shoe. This only happened once in the first 6 months of ownership, but it seems to have become a bit worse with age, happening probably once every couple of weeks now. I think it's due to a combination of sole wear and footbed compression, as well as possible strap-stretching. I'm wondering if the people that observed it from their initial purchase bought their's a bit too big? Either way, it's particularly vexing, because it tends to shred the front of the shoe when it happens on pavement, wearing it down further and leaving hanging bits of rubber that need to be clipped off. FINAL THOUGHTS: Unfortunately, due to the above folding problem, along with the traction issues that I mentioned in the last update, I've decided to drop a star from the initial review. These are very good shoes and are still among the best sandals I've ever owned, but there are some obvious improvements that could be made, particularly for someone who wears them every day. On the other hand, if you do not wear sandals every day, you will likely find that these will last you a long time; just take particular care to avoid getting it in a size that is too big for your foot. *Additional comment: I've noticed some more recent reviews refer to this shoe as having a "high" arch. I would agree that it is higher than most sandals (particularly cheap ones that just have no arch at all), but truly high arches kill my feet, and these shoes are very comfortable to me. I wouldn't expect that the manufacturing process would have changed over the last year, but just as a warning, YMMV when it comes to arch support. =================================================================================== *UPDATE: I've had these shoes for ~5 months now. These are my daily wearers, and I live in a climate that allows me to use them even in winter. Here are my observations: PROS: Despite some obvious compression, the footbed is still quite comfortable. There is no noticeable stretching, tearing, or other deterioration in the thong or upper, and there is no indication that they will fall apart on me any time soon. These shoes are well constructed. Tread wear is almost non-existent. They look almost like the day I bought them (also a possible con; see below). The colors haven't faded at all. CONS: Traction in certain wet environments (especially things like high-traffic tile floors during a rainstorm) is a big issue. They don't look like they would have as poor traction as they do, but I think the reason is indicated by the lack of tread wear. The outsole has held up so well because it is quite hard, which doesn't allow for much compression, and thus gives poor traction. They are still better than the Reef Phantoms, but I would put the Ohana only slightly over average for traction ability. The rubber outer edge of the shoe is prone to some cosmetic wear. I've rubbed them up against a curb or door on occasion, and it's a little more obvious than I would have expected. If the makers had used that same rubber for the bottom of the shoe, these shoes would probably have better traction (but wear down MUCH faster). In general, I am still happy with the purchase. These are definitely one of my favorite pairs. =================================================================================== *ORIGINAL REVIEW: I wear sandals daily, pretty much year-round. An unfortunate fact is that most sandals are not made for everyday wear. The problems range: many are too uncomfortable for long-term use, others just can't handle constant wear and quickly degrade. Some will be durable and comfortable, but ugly as sin, while still more will have weird quirks, like excessive "squeakiness," especially when wet. However, my single biggest peeve is that so many of them, even very expensive ones, have extremely poor soles. I don't expect them to allow you to run in a downpour, but I would hope that if I am caught in an afternoon shower, they have enough traction to keep me from careening off the sidewalk. I've owned many sandals with which you can "skate" on smooth, dry surfaces like linoleum (e.g. Reef Phantoms). I've been wearing the Olukai 'Ohana sandals for a little over three weeks now, and so far I am impressed, which is not an easy thing to do, especially at this price. Here are a few key things I like about these sandals so far: Comfort: The first surprise was that they feel ridiculously comfortable to me. It should be noted that I have pretty flat feet, so I require a very specific amount of arch support - just enough to prevent tendinitis, but not so much that my foot is contorted. These are PERFECT for that. They have a low-profile arch, but are very solid. The bed is somewhat spongy, but not too thick, which makes them very comfortable without being sweaty in warm weather. It remains to be seen how long they will maintain the shape and sponginess, but they seem well made, so I have high hopes. These are the most comfortable sandals I have ever owned, but people with high arches may want to avoid them (especially if you plan to wear them often). Thong: Another thing I appreciate is the nylon thong. My last pair of fairly expensive sandals (Sperry Top-Siders) were fantastic for looks and traction, but the leather thong had only a weak scrap of cotton as supplementary support, and it soaked up moisture. One of them rotted through in less than a year. They are now unwearable. The 'Ohana feels very well made, and the nylon won't rot. Looks: I bought the Dark Java color. The Sperrys (in very similar colors) were probably the best looking pair of sandals I've ever owned, but these are a solid second. The nylon thong, while very functional, is still just woven nylon. I was worried about the lighter foot-bed attracting dirt, but it hasn't been a problem so far. The two-tone style really makes them stand out without being gaudy, and the toe-shaped foot-bed adds some flair to what would otherwise be a fairly plain-looking shoe. Traction/Wet weather performance: I took these out into a rainstorm for a real-world test. This category is where these shoes both excel and fall flat. The sole is great. Not QUITE as good as the Sperrys, but certainly close enough. (They are significantly better than my Reef Phantoms.) The 'Ohana's sole will keep your feet planted...or at least the shoe. See, the issue is that when the foot-bed gets wet, it becomes slick as soap. Your feet want to slide WITHIN the shoe. Fortunately, the my sizing was perfect, and my foot remained tethered in the shoe by the thong and upper. Even though it was disconcerting, I could actually jog a short distance before I felt like I was tempting fate. However, if you bought these even SLIGHTLY too big, you would do well to avoid wet weather. This is the only true caveat I have found with these shoes at this point in time. So far I feel that these are great sandals, even given the relatively high price. As mentioned before, make SURE that you get the right size for your foot, and be weary if you have a high arch. I will try to update this review after some more use to see if they hold up.

**** Edited *** Super comfy Flip Flop, but coming apart and barely worn.
******EDITED: OLUKAI reached out even after the return deadline and is replacing the show. Awesome shoes and I've never had an issue, so I was especially pleased with their customer service. Great company and they stand behind their product. I love these flip flops. They are so comfortable and amazing to wear. However, having owned them for just over a month, the strap on the side has totally come off, and I have no way to contact the seller or opt for a return. I'm bummed. I don't have the money for another pair. So I'd recommend them, but don't love the return policy or quality.

More expensive than other flip flops but better quality and worth every penny!... stylish, comfortable, and stay on your feet.

These take a day to break in and then they are the most comfortable flip flop around. Because of the support, they almost feel closer to walking in a shoe than a flip flop. I can wear these all day with absolute comfort.

These are easily the comfiest sandals I've ever owned. I'm traditionally a 9.5 so I ordered a size 10 and the fit my wide feet perfectly.

Love these/this brand, they really knock it out of the park. I am on my second pair and this one was for my husband who is really impressed with the fit, the arch support and the style. A little on the pricy side in the grand scheme of things but I don't feel like cost/price was over the top. I highly recommend especially if you suffer from plantar fasciitis, the support is that good.

I expected these to get a much more comfortable fit for the price. Way too expensive to need to be broken in for so long.
