UPDATE 4/26/2019: This thermostat has been a complete nightmare! I'm lowering the rating from five-stars to one. Unfortunately, I replaced two thermostats in our house with these Kono smart thermostats, and they both experience the exact same problems. We've had professional HVAC technicians conclude the same thing - these are flawed! The worst problem, and the reason this product should be recalled, is the energized line that switches from AC to heat is broken. During a power outage for example, the line will switch making your air conditioner now your heat (but the unit still thinks it is using cooling). This causes the device to go haywire, and heat your home during the summer and cool it during the winter - randomly. A complete nightmare of a thermostat, stay far far away from this thing!UPDATE 1/3/2019: I would like to point out something that wasn't properly highlighted in the installation instructions. I had a BLUE wire that connected into the O/B connector on the thermostat. It's important to realize that you must set the thermostat to accept either an ORANGE (O) wire or BLUE (B) wire, thus the O/B. It defaults to O. Make sure this is properly set, or when your stage 1 heat is intended you will receive air conditioning instead, and vice versa.ORIGINAL REVIEW:I received the Kono Wifi Enabled Smart Thermostat to review, but I’ve also since bought another unit for a separate location. I love this thermostat! It’s not perfect and does have certain weaknesses which I’ll highlight below, but overall this is a winner.Installation was simple. The unit includes little label stickers to place on your existing wires. I have to admit to being mostly naïve about climate control units. In fact, I was even confused whether or not I had a heat pump or a furnace. But I figured it out without too much trouble. I ended up having six wires – C, Y1, G, B, R, and W2.The manual is great. The paper stock is nice and thick, the font size is large enough to not require reading glasses, and it is in full color. The installation instructions were precise and easy to understand. I basically cut the power from our circuit switch, labeled the cables, removed the old unit, screwed in the new unit into the existing holes, pressed the six wires into the correct slots, installed the plate, and done.At this point I could have used the thermostat in a traditional way, but the smart functionality is where this unit really shines. To complete this part of the installation I needed to download the app, create an account, connect my phone to the thermostat’s wifi, connect back to my home wifi, and done. Very simple and no problems. The Android app is great and we had no problems at all using it – either at home or away.So now for a couple of complaints. The geofencing capabilities are geared toward a single user. When my phone leaves the area the unit can be placed in away mode, and when I return the unit will return to normal operation. But if there is someone still in the home, this is useless. Additional geofencing users cannot be added. The second complaint would be with the front plate. It doesn’t snap into place very easily and is only held by small plastic notches. There is very little clearance for the wires, and the wires can block the plate from snapping in. This was a hassle during both installations. But overall, our household loves this unit. Having an easy intuitive control panel on our phone is a huge convenience. When we are away we can turn it down, and when we are headed back home we can turn it back up and have the climate ready for us when we arrive. There are additional colors that can be purchased also and it looks great on the wall. Highly recommended for those interested in smart home technology.

Attroceous user interface left me wanting my Ecobee3 Lite.
I am piecing together my own Homekit based smart home, and I have tried and review more than 60+ different Homekit compatible products. Of all the off brand products from speakers, to smart plugs, to bridges, the Kono Thermostat has without doubt the worst user interface I have ever seen. It reminds me of the first application I saw in Windows '98. Stuck in the late 90's it also lacks certain response/feedback to ensure commands are received and or processed. Ie. When you update the ecobee lite temperature, it shows the changes in real time both on the ecobee app and on homekit. The Kono shows only on the kono app, and take forever to update. Not only that, it has a very cumbersome process for making any customizations. Overall, I would have kept this thing if It had cost about $10. Otherwise it was going back from the get go.

Best of All
Having installed most high-end WiFi thermostats, Kono is my favorite. The software and setup is not as easy as some of the others, but rough simplicity has a certain appeal. Once installed (whew!) it is nice to just turn a knob to the temperature you want, push in and done. And… it is gorgeous on the wall.I hate anything from Honeywell, as they hire mean engineers who like to make things hard. Nest has the best SW for ease of use, but they have a “fixed” 3 degree swing; so nice packaging/SW/ease… but a horrible thermostat that will chill-cook you as a “feature”. Ecobee has the same problem with a high minimum swing. (In homes with wall/ceiling ducting, a wide swing—once the thermostat decides is enough—will still have momentum from the heat/cold in the walls and ducts, often 2Xing what the thermostat thinks is the swing.) The Emerson Sensi is the most “doesn’t belong on the wall” looking, and too clever by 3x: I could never disabuse it of its clever assumptions to get it to run correctly. My main complaint about the Kono is the byzantine programming approach, thus only a 4 out of 5. To set up WiFi, for example, you first connect to your phone and then the router, an (unnecessary) 2-stage set up… with all the likelihood of that going wrong. A two stage WiFi set up is very last-century, so why not just hook directly to the WiFi of choice and avoid all the support calls? Worst is the detailed programming, which even as an engineer I found daunting with all the codes and click throughs. Once done, it does give a sense of achievement; and there is a lot of access to features. As a suggestion to Lux, you’d get a 5 from me if all these detailed settings were accessible from the web interface… instead of having to click-through a long round-robin chain of arcane numbers.Speaking of which, Lux allows control from both phone and PC/web, something that I think is a must. Also, LUX, for all of its old fashioned approach, is the only thermostat in the list above that would reliably work with “OK Google” commands. The others were a nightmare of misunderstanding and frustration. I was surprised and delighted to find that the Kono JUST WORKS. Say “lower downstairs thermostat to 68 degrees” into the phone… and it does so, no fuss. Say what you will of the primitive engineering, you gotta admire a product that actually works. So A+ as a thermostat; better than all by a long shot. We are getting about a 2 degree swing with duct momentum (where the rooms keep getting warmer/cooler for minutes after the thermostat shuts off) set at 0.5 degrees swing; and this is the most important “feature” of a thermostat! The phone and web interfaces are pretty good, if not as flexible and user friendly as Nest. And Kono looks great on the wall with its elemental shape and textures, unlike the visual wart of the Ecobee or Sensi.I’d recommend, but be prepared to do some hacking (looking into the manual to see what the arcane sequence numbers mean) to set it up.And hey Lux: if you will expand access from the PC web interface to access all of the thermostat settings that would probably pay itself off in a few months of avoided service calls. And then you’d win on all fronts.

Great thermostat. Works well so far.
I S et up the Kono within less than half an hour. Physical installation process was painless (mostly because I had done hours of research beforehand and knew exactly what I had to do for my setup). I would recommend doing your research first, as every system is unique. The app and HomeKit setup was very quick and painless. The one critique I’d offer is that the setting menu is very confusing and hard to navigate. These settings are optional and not needed for most people, but you need to find a separate PDF from Lux just to find out what you’re working with. I’m relatively tech savvy so I was able to work it out, but it could definitely be overwhelming for some.

STOP SELLING THESE!!!! CAN NOT CONNECT, TOO OLD AS PER TECH SUPPORT!!!
I followed every step several times and I keep getting er:05 after it says done. When you search what this code is you can't find anything. Device shows up in app but says device is not connected. Works manually though, so half your money's worth
