Does the food retain water when it is washed?

Yes. I would not recommend putting them in the dishwasher (although, I have not tried this). To clean, I fill the sink with hot soapy water and use a wash cloth to clean, rinse & air dry.

Are they cheap soft plastic that's going to get smashed?

No, they are not made of cheap plastic. They will not get smashed. My granddaughter received her sets last Christmas and they are in the same condition as the day she first started playing with them.

PVC - the combine and dine dinner - red - has PVC so I would think this would too.

Do 5 year olds like to play pretend with food and dishes? I'm wondering if my nephew is too old for this.

I have 7 grandkids that play with the play dishes & this fake food. Ages: two 2 yr olds, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 they play restaurant and house cooking and serving with it. I want to get some more but with different foods
