Update: Replacements sent, battery fidgeting, now it works
UPDATE 3: Make that three years without a hitch.UPDATE 2: After two straight years of using this sharpener non stop, it still works just as well as when I got it. Can't praise it enough.UPDATE: After leaving a negative review regarding my experience with this sharpener, TripWorthy sent me an e-mail offering me to give me a refund and send me a replacement at no extra charge. I decided to take them up on their offer, as this really did look like the best pencil sharpener around that I could find, so I thought I'd give it another extra shot.A couple days later, I received the new sharpener in the mail. When I opened it, I was surprised to find two new sharpeners in the box instead of only one. I tried installing the batteries into the first one, and... still no luck. The sharpener just refused to work. Thinking that I either must have pretty bad luck with these sharpeners, or that these have terrible quality control, I took out the second one and tried my hand at that and then, surprisingly, it worked. And it worked quite well.I decided to go back to the first of the two, and tried fidgeting with the batteries some more... and then, that one suddenly started working as well. My only conclusion I can come to is that if the batteries are even -slightly- misaligned in any way, this unit will refuse to work. The way I installed the batteries that led to a successful operation was like this: I put in the batteries from the bottom up, starting from the bottom right and going up curving to the left. The battery compartment starts from the left and curves downwards and to the right, with the batteries being ordered Minus, Plus, Minus, Plus. I started from the final plus battery on the bottom right and went backwards. By installing them this way, it made it more likely for the unit to power on. I tried this method several times before with no luck, however, so I say give it a handful of different attempts at fidgeting with the batteries before declaring it completely dead. Now, as for the actual sharpening, it seems to work very efficiently. It creates a nice point with minimal effort and time, although I have noticed a few pencils having an "uneven" wood tip. So, only time will well how effective it is in the long run. As for TripWorthy themselves, I have to give them credit for having excellent customer service and going above and beyond to try and make things right, as they decided to send me both of these units for free. I can only assume that my previous defective unit must have been damaged while in the box, or was simply just broken to begin with. All in all this sharpener is good, better than other electric sharpeners I have, but be prepared to devote some time to getting the batteries to align properly.Old Review: Complete garbage, doesn't work no matter how much I fidgeted with the batteries and re-attached the cover. Waste of time and money. Better off with a normal sharpener so you don't have to deal with this nonsense.

Sharpens to a Point Every Time
My son is a office supply "junkie"r. We usually use pencils every single day. But when I need a sharpened pencil I , when I do I have to go to the other end of the house just to sharpen it. I saw this electronic pencil sharpener and thought this would be ideal for my office. I was surprised at the weight of the sharpener, it wasn’t lightweight or cheap feeling like I anticipated, and was made of thicker plastic parts, rather than thin. It was quite easy to set up, simply remove the bottom panel, insert batteries, and go. It sharpens smoothly and evenly with no chips, burrs, or broken lead. The clear cap lets you see when the shavings are full and should be emptied. Emptying the shavings is a snap, simply remove the clear cover, dump the shavings, and replace. While it is obvious that this is not made for, nor intended to, withstand heavy use, I sharpened about 10 new pencils before the cup was full and needed to be emptied and it handled it with ease. It sure beats cranking those small hand held sharpeners and is decorative enough to leave on my desk without taking up a lot of room. It could also easily be stowed in a drawer. This is the ideal solution for my home office and my son's drawing supplies I am very happy with this sharpener. I am considering another one to keep on my desk for myselfDisclaimer: I have received this product iat a discount or free in exchange to my hones unbiased review. This review is just my opinion of the product

Took forever to get it to work....
but then I came back here and read the negative reviews to see if others had the same problem. The review that helped said you can't jam the pencil in there but only put it in lightly. That did the trick. But I spent a good 15 minutes playing with the batteries first. Since my (Amazon) batteries were supposed to be good until 2028 I thought the sharpener was just a cheap piece of junk and that I'd have to send it back. The instructions were very limited and unclear. There's a display of how the batteries go in on the inside of the removable lid, but it's just a picture of + and -, so you don't know if that means head first making contact with the bottom or those symbols should be on top making contact with the lid. Usually with a battery powered device you can easily tell by the metal connectors inside but this wasn't clear so that I kept reversing them trying to get the thing to work. Finally when I read that you only very lightly put the pencil in (unlike any other sharpener I have ever used), that did the trick. So overall, so far, I'm satisfied with it but I've used it only once, and I didn't give it a high rating because it took so long and it seems awfully temperamental. After I've used it for a while, I may come back and adjust the rating more favorably.
