Is this magnet capable of supporting 5lbs, while stuck to a wall, without sliding down?

Well, this switchable magnet works very well. When turned "off," it still has a very slight amount of pull. Not really enough to be a problem. I attached it with a wire to a 5 pound dumb bell. It stayed on the side of a metal desk. Barely. Just a tiny movement of it would cause it to drop -- it slid down fast. I tried it on the side of my fridge also. It held firm. But the metal there is not smooth. Has little dimples which help make the surface rough. From this, I would guess that it would have no trouble with holding 5 pounds in a vertical direction, hanging from a steel beam, etc. When it slid, it stayed tight to the filing cabinet. -William

Can this be used to pick up metal shavings around a drill press and then when turned off expect those shavings to cleanly be released?

On thing to understand is that this magnet doesn’t pull things in at much more than a couple inches , you have to practically touch the chips before they get absorbed bare rare earth magnets are far better for attracting particles greater than inch or two away and most chip do fall away clean when it’s turned off but I haven’t tested it yet with anything as small as filings from grinding or filing
