The Dollhouse Murder Mystery is a romp. . .
I sat down with Polly Guerin’s "The Dollhouse Murder Mystery." last night and couldn't put it down until the final exclamation, "I just might be an impostor!" What a jolly romp of a story. The peripatetic and full-of-mischief Victoria (aka Julia) reminds me of the author and she really takes the reader for a ride. I was amused by all the characters introduced throughout the book – Ms. Guerin must have really done her research to garner all the info on each of these fascinating people. When Pettihomme comes on the scene things get really interesting and I couldn't put the thought of Christie's Poirot out of mind - he seems so much like him. The Marcel Duchamp character with his ever-present cigarette holder was most amusing – the vivid description of his mannerisms with that thing brought back memories of my own shenanigans with my Dunhill holder. Dropping "Bricktop" (Josephine Baker) into the mix truly enlivened the plot. I think the author’s fertile imagination was working overtime - so many interesting characters and so much detail about the life-style, fashion and mores of the Deco period brought glamour and excitement (not to mention an "education") to this tantalizing tale. I found myself laughing at some of the more outlandish characters and their comments. Julia/Victoria also finding romance during all of these goings-on was delicious - I wonder if she and suave John H. eventually tie the knot – perhaps Ms. Guerin is planning a sequel - time will tell!!Dirk vandenHeuvel, Wells, ME 12/05/2015
