Wicked sharp but watch your thumb
This knife is wicked sharp out of the box and holds its edge well. Watch how you hold it though. I was more used to western style knives and holding the knife with my thumb and forefinger on the very back of the blade I just accidentally touched the bottom of the blade with my thumb and it cut right in. The knife is so sharp that just a very light touch was all that it took. Needless to say I have adjusted how I hold the knife. Good product for the price although I don't know if the cladding on the blade actually adds to the knife significantly or if it is just cosmetic.Update: After two months of daily use, this has become my favorite knife. It is so sharp and effortless to use, and it keeps its edge. I have a number of knives, Wusthof Classic, Henkels, Dalstrong, and Victorinox, yet the Shun is my favorite.

It’s my tiny samurai sword :)
This is the 4th Shun knife we’ve purchased. Love this as much as the other 3. Expensive for sure but if you’re the type to take care of things, these could last a very very long time and look fantastic doing it

highly recommended
Amazing knife, they come wicked sharp of course but what's great about these knives is how well they touch up, very easy to maintain. Got this after having the Shun premier 8" Santoku for over a year and loving it. I'm kind of a knife snob and I thought I'd be underwhelmed with the Shuns because they're mainstream but thought I'd try one anyway and now I'm a convert. Everything about them is top notch and I plan to replace all my knives with the Shun Premiers over a period of time.

Ugh yea, presentation fail BUT extremely beautiful and sharp knife
I have seen knives that cost half this price that come with an absolute stunning presentation this pails in comparison it’s like they threw the knife in this junkie cardboard box. Pretty sad for a shun knife. Meh….Picture #2 represents the very nice and detailed packaging of the exact same pairing knife, but with the brown handle. So what’s up are the gray handle models like overstock or something? Literally my knife was what you saw dropped in a cardboard box no holder anythingMy unboxing rant is now over the knife is extremely sharp. It is well-balanced and it is beautiful. Buy it and get over the issues about how unfortunate the unboxing is. :-)

a beautiful knife
Go ahead, spoil yourself. It's beautiful, a joy to use. Don't stress over the fact that the hand-made, hammered look is just for show, it will impress your friends. We also have their steak knives, very similar, we highly recommend them as well.

Excellent quality knife!
Needed a good kitchen paring knife. Read the reviews and decided on this one. Great value for the money! A bit more expensive than the average kitchen paring knife but absolutely worth it. Stays razor sharp after much use and easily restores razor edge with just a touch up using the sharpening steel I also bought. Very happy with this purchase.
