Madame Bovary

I would never think to look at the dimensions of a book. This thing is almost 10" tall. Because of the size its only 190 pages which actually makes it quite flimsy in paperback when trying to read a novel with one hand. On top of that, its printed in dark black on what feels like plain bright white printer paper. Its like a long binded academic paper. The penquin classic version is over 300 pages and more appropriately sized, I'm returning this copy for that one.

This is by far one of my favorite books. After hearing so much about this classic, when I first read it I was a bit underwhelmed by the slow pace. It wasn't until a while after I finished that I realized how amazing this book truly is. I become completely haunted by the book and couldn't get thoughts of the characters out of my head. I'm about to read the book for a second time. I highly recommend this book.

I am really surprised that nobody has commented on the quality of the translation of this edition. While the format is ...unique, the principal problem of this edition is that it seems to have been generated by google translate, with minimal intervention by somebody with a rather rudimentary command of the English language. Considering that no translation credits are given, I strongly suspect that translation is not the primary occupation of said individual. They butchered Flaubert to the point of incomprehensibility. It appears that somebody has discovered that they can make a quick buck by running a foreign text that is out of copyright through a computer program , slapping a pretty picture on it and self-publishing it on Amazon.Do yourselves a favor and spring for an edition from a real publisher, it costs only $2 more. And whoever did this to Flaubert: Shame on you!
