A good book with beautiful pictures
A good book with beautiful pictures, but definitely not for the novice reader. It seems a bit pretentious at times, as one would expect from the Country Life writers. Still, it's a fascinating book, and an inside look at some of the most beautiful houses in the world.

This is a beautiful collection of English manor homes
This is a beautiful collection of English manor homes. The attractive color and black and white photos help share the beauty and history of some of the grand old homes of the English countryside. I wish that I would have had this book as a travel guide before my trips to England.

Stone English Homes
I have been fascinated by the old stone housesof England, and am going to use the photos in this book to make miniature houses, and drawings for my personal use.

Buy (but don't buy)
This is a lovely, evocative book at a cheap, cheap price, highly recommended, BUT, but, but, but it was previously published in 2008 under a different title and cover as Country Houses of the Cotswolds. You may already have this, if so then don't go through the rigmarole of buying again and returning (as I did).

In a Place Far Away
This book will either please you greatly or disappoint. I am one of those who enjoy it - for the wealth of historical photographs. This is a classic Rizzoli production: top quality paper, not simply glued into the spine but bound in sewn signatures, with high resolution reproductions of the photographs. Page layouts are sophisticated, with varying compositions of different sized photos and well-chosen type. The text is a bit dry, in the manner of Nicholas Pevsner. The photographs come from Country Life, a magazine famous for recording the great houses of Britain. They date from 1900 to 2007, and the photographers are credited wherever possible (!). Most are high quality prints from the 1910s to 1930s - before the Great Depression and post-war developments brought an end to grand country living (think Downton Abbey). Most are in black and white and all have the classic Country Life feature of purging the image of any living being and any kind of vehicle: house and garden only! This has the effect of making the pictures seem timeless - like they could have been made at any date - but also making them seem to come from a time far away. This book was published in Great Britain as Country Houses of the Cotswolds, which is a more accurate title - this is not the whole "English Countryside" just Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire (admittedly a lovely region). It is organized chronologically: Castles; Manor Houses (medieval, Renaissance and Jacobean); Classical Houses (Baroque, Georgian, Regency); Victorian Revival; Arts and Crafts. It is easy to marvel at these splendid residences but you know they come from another time.
