At 1,932 feet deep, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. It fills the caldera created by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Mazama, about 7,700 years ago. The volcano was part of the plateau base of the Cascade Range. Wizard Island, which rises 764 feet above the water surface in Crater Lake, is the top of a cinder cone formed by subsequent volcanic activity. Crater Lake National Park, in central Oregon, was established in 1902.
