One can a year!
I prefer Spectracide for everything outdoor related, started with their concentrated weed killer, it worked so good and for so long I decided to try out their other products, this is the 5th year using it. The Ant Shield, like the weed killer, it works a long time, I buy subscribe and save only ONE can a year, for us if a mound pops up I spray it and they don’t return until maybe the following year, this stuff is no joke, we spray a outline around our WM trash container once at the beginning of spring and no ants is ever seen on or in the trash container for the year. Even kills spiders, the wife is a arachnophobia, I wasn’t home one evening so she thought to spray it with the Ant Shield and she said it was dead in under a minute, I was curious how it would work on brown recluse and black widows since I see them quite often on our property, BW dropped dead in about 5 minutes, BR in 2-3 minutes, so makes for a great spider spray as well, i spray around the areas where I use to see them and we don’t see them nowhere near as much as we used to, so their claim it also kills spiders is accurate, unsure about roaches, ticks or the other insects listed, but usually if a spray can kill spider’s then any other insects won’t survive. It has a typical chemical smell to it, maybe not as strong as the other leading brands, we never use it indoors. The lid to me comes off easily but there’s resistance, a child should not be able to open it, the wife has a hard enough time too. Has a excellent spray nozzle, it fans out and saturates evenly, never getting any on ourselves. Excellent value, cost a little more but saves at the same time, before switching to Spectracide, we would go through 3-4 cans a year of the other brands we’ve used. Definitely worth it, highly recommend.

Yes...it does work!
So if you want these ant bait stations to work, you will need to spend a little time watching where the ants are coming from (if it isn't obvious at first) and what is the route they travel when they leave the nests. I generally pick the busiest ant holes and plunk one of these directly into it. You can place one along the route they travel instead or in addition to targeting a busy ant hole if infestation is high. Unbelievably so, Maine does have fire ants. I was trying to clear some leftover loam a couple of years ago, cleaning weeds out of it and loosening up the soil, and suddenly found myself standing in a fire ant nest getting bitten and stung around my ankles and lower shins. I never had to worry about that while growing up here and never knew that Southern Maine has them now. They are everywhere now and when you live in a residential area with a neighbor who has let their property go completely wild and does not care about anything, you need to find something to keep them at bay. The Spectracide Ant shield bait stations help a lot. Besides dumping boiling water on the nests, which unfortunately also kills the grass, I use these bait stations to do a lot of the work for me. I placed one on an ant nest on the neighbor's property last year in an area I mow to keep the nasty overgrowth away from my property. I found that I needed the bait stations after I had agitated this nest so much with daily boiling water that by June last year, they were swarming in great numbers along the side of my driveway. (Yes, I washed all those away with more boiling water!) By sometime in August (after about a month's time using Spectracide), there was no ant activity whatsoever. In October, while mowing over that area my leg went through the sod that was left, down almost to my knee. So the bait station picked up where my boiling water dumps left off last summer and killed off the rest of an apparently very large colony, causing the ground to collapse. Like I said, these fire ants are everywhere now. This Spectracide product is part of my regimen in controlling them as they are almost impossible to get rid of completely, especially since I will be getting no help from that neighbor. The bait stations are working once again this year, attracting a lot of ant activity to them so the ants can take part in the destruction of their own colony. I am thankful to have these and that they are easy to use. Be aware that squirrels like the smell of the product and may steal and destroy it by biting them. I use a small stone or brick to weigh down the bait station when squirrels become a problem.

Does the Job
I live in Florida. Ants are an ongoing challenge and they are aggressive. This particular product is excellent. It was not evident to me at purchase but the bag itself also serves as the spreader. It has a built in handle and once you unzip the bag you can spread it slowly and evenly to ant hills and around the edge of your house or landscaping. Plus most importantly: it destroys the colony.

Not effective with severe infestations
Doesn’t seem to work- but I have a very SEVERE ant infestation. I’ve tried poisons, bait, just about everything and nothing seems to deter them. I also noticed they tend to build MORE mounds next to these… not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing but I didn’t feel like these worked and I’ve had them for about 4 weeks now…

Squirrels
Works great but the squirrels like to pick them up and drop them in difference places

The only thing that worked!
This is the only thing that has actually worked to kill the ants in my backyard. We had ants so bad in our backyard that I thought we had voles because the mounds and holes were so big. We had masses of ants swarming along the back of our house, under the stairs, next to and in our garden. I tried diatomaceous earth, sprays, liquid ant baits from other companies, and I swear it just made the ants breed faster and get stronger. These ant killing stakes actually killed the ants. Within two days, instead of there being swarms of ants there was dead ants everywhere. My dog left it alone and didn't seem interested in it at all. It's been a couple weeks now and we're still ant-free.
